Evolution key to free school deal

Failing to teach evolution by natural selection in science lessons could lead to new free schools losing their funding under government changes.

The new rules state that from 2013, all free schools in England must teach evolution as a "comprehensive and coherent scientific theory".

The move follows scientists' concerns that free schools run by creationists might avoid teaching evolution.

Sir Paul Nurse, president of the Royal Society, said he was "delighted".

Sir Paul told BBC News the previous rules on free schools and the teaching of evolution versus creationism had been "not tight enough".

'Creationist myth'

He said that although the previous rules had confined creationism to religious education lessons, "the Royal Society identified a potential issue that schools could have avoided teaching evolution by natural selection in science lessons or dealt with it in a such a perfunctory way, that the main experience for students was the creationist myth".

So far 79 free schools have opened in England with 118 more due to open in 2013 and beyond. They are funded directly by central government but unlike other state-funded schools are run by groups of parents, teachers, charities and religious groups and do not have to abide by the national curriculum.

The new rules mean if a free school is found to be acting in breach of its funding agreement - for example, teaching creationism as a scientific fact or not teaching evolution - the Department for Education will take "swift action which could result in the termination of that funding agreement".

The development of the theory of evolution is an excellent example of how science works and there is a clear consensus within the scientific community regarding both its validity and importance ?

End Quote Sir Paul Nurse President, Royal Society

In a letter to the Royal Society, the Schools Minister, Lord Hill, said: "While we have always been clear that we expect to see evolution included in schools' science curricula, this new clause will provide more explicit reassurance that free schools will have to meet that expectation."

Sir Paul Nurse said: "The new clause in the funding agreement should ensure that all pupils at free schools have the opportunity to learn about evolution as an extensively evidenced theory and one of the most fundamentally important tenets of modern biology.

"The development of the theory of evolution is an excellent example of how science works and there is a clear consensus within the scientific community regarding both its validity and importance."

A spokesman for the Department for Education said that the new clause would apply to the Grindon Hall Christian school in Sunderland and two others that this year became the focus of concerns about the teaching of creationism in free schools.

Grindon Hall, which was independent, reopened as a free school in September. The two others approved by ministers are not due to open until 2013.

In July the principal of Grindon Hall said that creationism would never be taught in science lessons.

'Additional safeguards'

Rachel Wolf, director of the New Schools Network, which provides advice and support for groups who want to set up free schools, welcomed the funding agreement changes but said that the existing rules meant free schools already had to teach evolution in science lessons.

"To my knowledge free schools have always had to teach evolution in science, but it is great that the government has reaffirmed its commitment to this," she said.

Andrew Copson, chief executive of the British Humanist Association, organisers of a Teach Evolution not Creationism campaign, said: "A requirement to teach evolution in free schools is an excellent additional safeguard against state-funded creationist schools and must be welcomed.

"However, we continue to be concerned about the three free schools recently approved which are supportive of teaching creationism as science and which we must worry will continue to find ways to circumvent a ban in practice."

Dr Berry Billingsley who leads a Reading University project on how secondary schools handle questions that bridge science and religion cautioned against an oversimplified debate.

"Evolution is a fantastic theory and explains so much about how humans come to be here. It is backed up by evidence and supported by the vast majority of scientists in the biological sciences. Many of those scientists also believe that the Universe is here because of God.

"The importance of studying evolution is indeed the first thing to be said but children also need opportunities somewhere in the timetable to explore the 'Big Questions', which our research shows they want to consider and it is often the science lesson that stirs up those questions."

Paul Bate, of the European Educators Christian Association, agreed schools should teach a broad and balanced curriculum: "Science and religion need each other in this debate. Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of all time said, 'Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.'"

Engadget's New York City meetup wrap-up!

Engadget's New York City meetup wrapup!

Wow. Thank you, New York City! We had a blast at last night's reader meetup, and judging from everyone we spoke to, a Roseland Ballroom packed full of Gotham gadget geeks had a grand 'ole time as well. Twelve lucky readers walked away with a Samsung Galaxy Note II on Sprint and nearly 30 people took home house cleaning bots from the folks at iRobot -- not to mention the Nook tablets, Oakley Airwave goggles and VestGuard UK Ballistic bulletproof case and iPad, to name but a few. We tested readers' tech (and Wu Tang) knowledge and dancing and singing skills.

There were booths from Sprint, Samsung, Garmin, Speck, Dell, Barnes & Noble, MakerBot, iRobot, Oakley and GoGo Inflight, or as attendee Peter M. put it, a "mini-CES meets A Night at the Improv." Relive the magic in the gallery below.

Facebook can make games after Zynga change

Facebook and Zynga revamped terms of a years-old partnership that was widely viewed as giving Zynga preferential treatment on the world's No.1 online social network, according to regulatory filings from the two companies Thursday.

The agreement is seen as a move by Facebook to level the playing field between Zygna and other game makers the social network is trying to attract.

The new terms give Zynga more flexibility to offer games on its own website, but subjects the maker of FarmVille and other popular social games to the same rules as other game makers on the social network.

The two fast-growing social Internet companies, which went public within seven months of each other, have been intimately tied. In recent quarters, fees from Zynga contributed more than 15 percent of Facebook's total revenues.

The revised agreement allows Facebook to develop its own games, according to a filing by Zynga on Wednesday. A person close to Facebook said the company "was not in the business of building games and we have no plans to do so."

Both Internet players have been trying to reduce their inter-dependence, with Zynga starting up its own Zynga.com platform, and Facebook wooing other games developers.

Among the myriad terms of their new agreement, Zynga could elect not to use Facebook's payments mechanism to collect revenue or display Facebook's ads.

"We have streamlined our terms with Zynga so that Zynga.com's use of Facebook Platform is governed by the same policies as the rest of the ecosystem," a spokesman said in a statement. "We will continue to work with Zynga, just as we do with developers of all sizes."

URI, IAA Archaeologists Discover Shipwrecks, Ancient Harbor on Coast of Israel

The discoveries were presented on November 15 and 17 in Chicago at the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research by URI assistant professors Bridget Buxton and William Krieger on behalf of the Israel Coast Exploration project.

According to Buxton, three of the four well-preserved shipwrecks found off the coast south of Akko were first detected using a sub-bottom profiler in 2011. Later, storms stripped off several meters of inshore sediments and temporarily revealed the wrecks, as well as an additional large vessel. The wrecks are now reburied.

During the brief time the shipwrecks were exposed, the Israel Antiquities Authority investigated one of them: a 32 meter vessel which still preserved its brass gudgeon (rudder socket) and many small artifacts, such as plates, a candlestick, and even a cooking pot with bones in it. Laboratory analyses completed this summer by the IAA revealed that the ship's wood came from Turkey. The team believes these ships may have belonged to the Egyptian navy under Admiral Osman Nurredin Bey, whose ships were severely damaged in his attempt to capture Akko in the Egyptian-Ottoman War of 1831. The town eventually fell to Egyptian land forces under Ibrahim Pasha in 1832.

"These ships have occasionally been exposed and buried again by storms since we found them," Buxton said. "We're in a race against time to find other ships in the area and learn from them before storms totally dislodge or destroy them."

Although shipwrecks from the 1800s are not the highest priorities in a region where civilization goes back thousands of years, Buxton is excited by the discovery for what it tells her about where much older ships may be found.

"Like many underwater archaeologists I'm very interested in finding a well-preserved example of an ancient multi-decked warship from the Hellenistic age," said Buxton. "These ships were incredible pieces of technology, but we don't know much about their design because no hulls have been found. However, a combination of unusual environmental and historical factors leads us to believe we have a chance of finding the remains of one of these ships off the northern coast of Israel."

Buxton believes that the ships they are looking for are likely buried in the coastal sediment, which has built up over the centuries through natural processes. However, time is not on their side. "That protective silt is now being stripped away," she said. "And it's being stripped away a lot faster than it was originally dumped, by a combination of development, environmental changes, and the effects of the Aswan Dam." The Nile River has historically deposited large quantities of silt in the area, but the dam has significantly reduced the flow of silt.

The archaeologists found the ships and another early modern vessel within Akko's modern harbor while testing their equipment in preparation for an ongoing survey out in deeper water. The sub-bottom profiler detects anomalies below the sea floor. "It's the gift that keeps on giving," Buxton said. "We found so many targets to explore that we didn't have time to check all of them, but even just having information about where things are helps Koby (Jacob Sharvit, director of the IAA Maritime Antiquities Unit) know where to look after any big storms."

One line of buried targets detected off the southern seawall of old Akko is particularly suggestive. Continuing excavations in this area over the summer revealed an alignment between these targets and a newly-discovered slipway and shipshed structure, which continued out under the sea floor 25 meters from the Ottoman city wall. The feature resembles other naval shipsheds found in places such as Athens where they were used to haul up ancient warships. The excavation project was initially undertaken to strengthen the eroding sea wall, but it also revealed Hellenistic masonry, pottery vessels, an ancient mooring stone, and a stone quay 1.3 meters below the modern sea level. The possibility that much more of the Hellenistic port lies well-preserved under the sea floor is exciting for the archaeologists, because it means that shipwrecks from earlier centuries that have so far not been found at Akko may simply be buried deeper down in the sediment.

"We've got fragmentary historic records for this area in the Hellenistic period, and now we've found a very important feature from the ancient harbor. Ancient shipwrecks are another piece of the puzzle that will help us to rewrite the story of this region at a critical time in Mediterranean history," she said.

Located on the northern coast of Israel, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Akko is one of the few cities in the Mediterranean with more than 5,000 years of maritime history. Also known as Acre, Ake and Ptolemais, its port was an important waypoint for the Phoenicians, Romans, Crusaders, Ottomans and other ancient maritime empires. In the Hellenistic period, it was bitterly fought over by the rival empires of Egypt and Syria.

"Understanding the history and archaeology of Akko's port is crucial to understanding the broader issues of maritime connectivity and the great power struggles that defined the history of the Eastern Mediterranean during the Hellenistic Age," Buxton said.

Problem set 10? - Business Risk Management

I have decided to count problem set 10 as an extra credit problem set. What this means is that I will use your grade on this assignment to replace your lowest problem set grade in Finance 4335 (assuming that your grade on the extra credit is higher than your lowest problem set grade).

While I recognize that this change creates a obvious moral hazard (in that it lessens (on the margin) your incentives to work hard on completing the problem set by the start of class tomorrow), I still want y?all to give the problem set your best shot. If you have any questions about this extra credit opportunity, please let me know by emailing me at James_Garven or calling me at 254-307-1317.

Learn a New Recipe Using Farmer's Market Squash - Concord, CA ...

Squash ? despite its soft-sounding name ? can be intimidating. There are so many varieties, and each one presents a new and strange culinary feat to the household chef. But, thankfully, the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association (PCFMA) has some tips.

This week, the advice is for acorn squash ? an oversized acorn-shaped winter squash with distinctive longitudinal ribs, a green-orange-black speckled skin, and sweet, yellow-orange flesh, according to PCFMA. Like other squashes, the seeds need to be scooped out, but can be roasted and eaten as a snack.

Acorn squash is usually baked, but saut?ing?or steaming works too. When cut in half latitudinally, PCFMA says, the squash forms a star-shaped bowl perfect for stuffing with aromatic vegetables like leeks, celery, and carrots along with grains like rice, paired with herbs like sage, curry, or oregano, and topped-off with dried fruits and nuts.

Is there a more perfect accompanyment to a winter feast than a star-shaped vegetable? Perhaps it's time to find out.

Dark Matter Mystery May Soon Be Solved

The hiding spots for the particles making up dark matter are narrowing, and the answer to this cosmic mystery could come within the next three or four years, scientists say.

Dark matter is an elusive substance that is invisible and almost never detected, except by its gravitational pull. Yet astronomers say it likely makes up a quarter of the entire universe and dwarfs the amount of normal matter (galaxies, stars and planets) out there in space.

Just last week, particle physics discovery from the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland cast doubt on a theory called supersymmetry, which predicts the existence of particles that are among the leading candidates for dark matter. That finding limited the types of supersymmetric particles that can exist, but didn't take the supersymmetry explanation off the table completely.

And supersymmetric particles are just one of a number of theorized particles that might account for dark matter. Searches for these and other undiscovered particles have been underway for decades, though none have been detected so far. [Twisted Physics: 7 Mind-Blowing Findings]

"I think we're looking in enough different ways that unless it's something that we just haven't thought of at all yet, it seems to me we're very likely to find it within the next decade," said Dan Bauer, a physicist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois working on one of the experiments, called CDMS.

Dark matter on the run

The leading experiments aimed at detecting dark matter are just starting to operate at sensitivity levels thought to be sufficient to detect signals from these particles, and their results should be in within about three or four years, Bauer said.

"If we don?t find it in this next round of experiments, I think everyone will be a bit discouraged," Bauer told SPACE.com.

To be dark matter, the potential particles must all be neutral and stable, and interact very rarely with other types of matter.

Most of these fall into a category of heavy particles called weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). WIMPs are predicted by supersymmetry, posits the existence of heavier partner particles for all the known particles in the universe with the same electric charge but different spin. [NASA's Quest for Dark Matter (Video)]

Several experiments are underway to search for WIMPs by placing large masses of material, such as xenon or germanium, deep underground and shielded by many layers of protection aiming to keep all other particles out. If any particles do make it past these barriers and collide with the atoms in the xenon or germanium, they will very likely be WIMPs, the thinking goes.

CDMS (which stands for the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search), started in a tunnel underneath Stanford University in California, and a newer, more sensitive version of the project is now underway even deeper underground in Minnesota's Soudan Mine.

Another WIMP-hunting experiment is called XENON100, the latest iteration of a search based at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory in Italy. And a new project called LUX (the Large Underground Xenon experiment) under construction at the Homestake mine in South Dakota could be a big player, too.

Having all these competing projects is ultimately necessary, if any result is to be believed.

"Most people in the field agree you're going to need to see evidence of this in more than one experiment and more than one type before everyone's convinced," Bauer said.

Other possibilities

And WIMPs aren't the only candidate particles for dark matter. Another potential solution to the problem is called the axion. This is a theorized particle that is also neutral and weakly interacting, but might lighter than WIMPs. Therefore, if axions are dark matter, there would have to be a lot more of them around.

An experiment called the Axion Dark Matter Experiment (ADMX) at the University of Washington uses a large superconducting magnet to search for these particles. So far, that search has turned up empty as well.

And an even weirder explanation for dark matter comes from the idea that there are tiny hidden dimensions wrapped up inside the known four dimensions of space-time in our universe. If that's the case, there could be accompanying particles called Kaluza?Klein particles that account for dark matter. However, these would be even harder to detect.

And it's too soon to rule out even more the unlikely sounding explanations.

"The things we thought were higher probability haven't shown up yet, so we should keep an open mind," said theoretical physicist Lance Dixon of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California.

Keep the dark matter hope alive

Despite the difficulty of finding dark matter, whatever it is, physicists say they're not discouraged.

"I'm pretty confident that dark matter is real, and it seems attractive for it to be carried by an elementary particle, although I could think it might not be exactly that way," Dixon said. "We might not be lucky that the elementary particle that is one that is within the realm of detection."

Bauer said he's been working on CDMS for a long time, and admitted to thinking, at first, that he would have found something by now.

"I guess it?s the natural optimism of physicists to think this is something we might actually be able to find," he said. But even if his experiment never detects dark matter, that in itself tells scientists something interesting.

"It would be more exciting if we saw it than if we didn?t, but it's an important result either way," Bauer said.

South Korea: HHI Develops LNG Storage Tank>> LNG World News

HHI Develops LNG Storage Tank

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world?s biggest shipbuilder, said that it has developed an independent liquefied natural gas storage tank model, Lobe-Bundle Tank.

Hyundai Heavy?s newly-developed LNG storage tank won Approval in Principle from the Japanese classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NK) in June 2012. While the storage tank is designed for 165,000 cbm LNG carriers, it can also be used in LPG carriers, LNG FPSO, LNG fueled vessels, and LNG bunkering systems.

The Lobe-Bundle Tank uses ring-shaped plates instead of conventional flat plates to reduce the weight of the tank and building cost significantly. The tank is built using spray-type insulation rather than panel-type insulation, substantially reducing construction time.

Hyundai Heavy?s LNG tank technology meets International Maritime Organization standards requiring high level of structural analysis and fatigue/fracture analysis for Type B independent LNG storage tanks.

Hyundai Heavy plans to build pilot LNG storage tanks and acquire general approval from NK by 2013.

New Congress: Fewer moderates make deals harder

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When the next Congress cranks up in January, there will be more women, many new faces and fewer tea party-backed House Republicans from the class of 2010.

Overriding those changes, though, is a thinning of centrist veterans in both parties. Among those leaving are some of the Senate's most pragmatic lawmakers, nearly half the House's centrist Blue Dog Democrats and several moderate House Republicans.

That could leave the parties more polarized even as President Barack Obama and congressional leaders talk up the cooperation needed to tackle complex, vexing problems such as curbing deficits, revamping tax laws and culling savings from Medicare and other costly, popular programs.

"This movement away from the center, at a time when issues have to be resolved from the middle, makes it much more difficult to find solutions to major problems," said William Hoagland, senior vice president of the Bipartisan Policy Center, a private group advocating compromise.

In the Senate, moderate Scott Brown, R-Mass., lost to Democrat Elizabeth Warren, who will be one of the most liberal members. Another GOP moderate, Richard Lugar of Indiana, fell in the primary election. Two others, Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Olympia Snowe of Maine, are retiring.

Moderate Democratic senators such as Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, James Webb of Virginia are leaving, as is Democratic-leaning independent Joe Lieberman.

While about half the incoming 12 Senate freshmen of both parties are moderates, new arrivals include tea party Republican Ted Cruz of Texas, conservative Deb Fischer of Nebraska, and liberals such as Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Hawaii's Mazie Hirono.

There's a similar pattern in the House.

"Congress seems to be going in the opposite direction of the country, just as the country is screaming for solutions to gridlock," said Democratic strategist Phil Singer.

Gold Fields Q3 earnings fall as strikes bite

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Gold Fields, the world's fourth largest gold producer, posted a 19 percent fall in third quarter earnings on Thursday that fell short of expectations as a fire and illegal strikes at its South African mines ate into profit.

Gold Fields, a South Africa-based miner with global operations, said adjusted earnings were 202 cents compared to 250 cents in the previous quarter. A Reuters poll of six analysts had forecast 212.8 cents.

Production dropped 6 percent to 810,000 ounces in the three months from July to September after the company lost 30,000 ounces to a deadly fire that shut part of its KDC operations near Johannesburg for months.

A further 35,000 ounces were lost during the wildcat strikes at its South African operations.

Striking miners only returned to work in early November, prompting the company to cut its 2012 production target to 3.3 million ounces from 3.4 million ounces.

'Dallas' star Larry Hagman dies in Texas

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Larry Hagman, whose predatory oil baron J.R. Ewing on television's long-running nighttime soap opera "Dallas" became a symbol for 1980s greed and coaxed forth a Texas-sized gusher of TV ratings, has died. He was 81.

Hagman, who returned as J.R. in a new edition of "Dallas" this year, passed away Friday afternoon due to complications from his battle with cancer, according to a statement from the family provided to The Associated Press by Warner Bros., producer of "Dallas."

"Larry was back in his beloved hometown of Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved the most," the family said. "Larry's family and closest friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday."

Linda Gray, his on-screen wife in the original series and the sequel, was with Hagman when he died in a Dallas hospital, said her publicist, Jeffrey Lane.

"He brought joy to everyone he knew. He was creative, generous, funny, loving and talented, and I will miss him enormously. He was an original and lived life to the fullest," Gray said in a statement.

Hagman was diagnosed in 1992 with cirrhosis of the liver and acknowledged that he had drank heavily for years. In 1995, a malignant tumor was discovered on his liver and he underwent a transplant.

Years before "Dallas," Hagman had gained TV fame as a nice guy with the fluffy 1965-70 NBC comedy "I Dream of Jeannie," in which he played Capt. Tony Nelson, an astronaut whose life is disrupted when he finds a comely genie, portrayed by Barbara Eden, and takes her home to live with him.

He also starred in two short-lived sitcoms, "The Good Life" (NBC, 1971-72) and "Here We Go Again" (ABC, 1973). His film work included well-regarded performances in "The Group," ''Harry and Tonto" and "Primary Colors."

But it was Hagman's masterful portrayal of the charmingly loathsome J.R. that brought him his greatest stardom. The CBS serial drama about the Ewing clan and those in their orbit aired from April 1978 to May 1991.

The "Who shot J.R.?" story twist, in which Hagman's character was nearly murdered in a cliffhanger episode, fueled international speculation and millions of dollars in betting-parlour wagers. It also helped give the series a ratings record for the time.

When the answer was revealed in a November 1980 episode, an average 41 million viewers tuned in to make "Dallas" the second most-watched entertainment show of all time, trailing only the "MASH" finale in 1983 with 50 million viewers.

It was J.R.'s sister-in-law, Kristin (Mary Crosby) who plugged him ? he had made her pregnant, then threatened to frame her as a prostitute unless she left town ? but others had equal motivation.

Hagman played Ewing as a bottomless well of corruption with a charming grin: a business cheat and a faithless husband who tried to get his alcoholic wife, Sue Ellen (Linda Gray), institutionalized.

"I know what I want on J.R.'s tombstone," Hagman said in 1988. "It should say: 'Here lies upright citizen J.R. Ewing. This is the only deal he ever lost.'"

On Friday night, Victoria Principal, who co-starred in the original series, recalled Hagman as "bigger than life, on-screen and off. He is unforgettable, and irreplaceable, to millions of fans around the world, and in the hearts of each of us, who was lucky enough to know and love him."

Ten episodes of the new edition of "Dallas" aired this past summer and proved a hit for TNT. Filming had been completed for five of the episodes for the second season and work on the sixth episode was in progress, the network said.

There was no immediate comment from Warner or TNT on how the series would deal with Hagman's loss.

In 2006, Hagman did a guest shot on FX's drama series "Nip/Tuck," playing a macho business mogul. He also got new exposure in recent years with the DVD releases of "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Dallas."

The Fort Worth, Texas, native was the son of singer-actress Mary Martin, who starred in such classics as "South Pacific" and "Peter Pan." Martin was still in her teens when he was born in 1931 during her marriage to attorney Ben Hagman.

As a youngster, Hagman gained a reputation for mischief-making as he was bumped from one private school to another. He made a stab at New York theater in the early 1950s, then served in the Air Force from 1952-56 in England.

While there, he met and married young Swedish designer Maj Axelsson. The couple had two children, Preston and Heidi, and were longtime residents of the Malibu beach colony that is home to many celebrities.

Hagman returned to acting and found work in the theater and in such TV series as "The U.S. Steel Hour," ''The Defenders" and "Sea Hunt." His first continuing role was as lawyer Ed Gibson on the daytime serial "The Edge of Night" (1961-63).

He called his 2001 memoir "Hello Darlin': Tall (and Absolutely True) Tales about My Life."

"I didn't put anything in that I thought was going to hurt someone or compromise them in any way," he told The Associated Press at the time.

After his transplant, he became an advocate for organ donation and volunteered at a hospital to help frightened patients.

"I counsel, encourage, meet them when they come in for their operations, and after," he said in 1996. "I try to offer some solace, like 'Don't be afraid, it will be a little uncomfortable for a brief time, but you'll be OK.' "

He also was an anti-smoking activist who took part in "Great American Smoke-Out" campaigns.

10 Adorable Animals Feeding Other Animals [VIDEOS]

While authorities have pegged thick Texas fog as the main culprit in the 140-car Thanksgiving pileup on I-10 just southwest of Beaumont, big rig truckers posting on Internet message boards suggest that civilian and professional drivers maintaining potentially reckless speeds, despite the conditions, may have been another major contributing factor.

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

SEO, or ?search engine optimization?, means setting up your website so that it is as high as possible in the search engine rankings. There are many paid services just for increasing SEO. You may have been told by people that effective SEO is complicated and should be left to the professionals. Pay no attention to that.

One of the first questions to ask is how many years of experience they have in SEO. You will want to find out what risks are involved in order to make the best decisions for your site.

Configure your server such that it differentiates capital and lowercase letters in URLs. Not checking this can end up in less traffic to your site.

Focus on mastering one SEO strategy at a time. There are not enough minutes in a day to get a hold of every technique. You need to focus your understanding on just a few areas and master them fully.

Many believe that keywords in their comment tags will create a more visible site. You should focus on the things you post on your site.

If you are looking to increase your site?s visibility, you need to make sure that you sign up for free local listing through Google and Yahoo. These services get your site noticed, which means more people will visit your site. Do not turn down free publicity.

Do not create pages full of links. Instead, incorporate the links into your page content, so there is a blending of both links and pertinent material for your readers. Link pages are boring to your readers and are not ranked highly by the search engines. You will appear to know what you are doing if all of your information is relevant.

When you optimize a web page using keywords, you should focus on a single phrase that will attract traffic. Stuffing a page with more than one keyword tends to lead to confusion. The better your content, the more interested your readers will be. Search engine optimization is important but a establishing a core group of readers will benefit your business in great ways.

Keywords will help you improve the visibility of your sites. Coordinate your keywords with your article topics. This makes it easier for search engines to index your work. It will be easier to draw new readers into your site. Place a keyword in the title, in the summary, and include it in the body about four to five times.

If you upgrade your website often, you will get more attention from search engine spiders. The better the content you provide, the more likely it is to be shared on other websites, providing you backlinks and increased traffic. After an article is shared, it starts to bring in higher levels of traffic.

If you are managing a business website, encourage the CEO or the owner of the business to become involved online. People like hearing from the big guy himself.

Social media sites can serve as great marketing tools to promote your business. YouTube is great for videos, while Facebook and Twitter allow direct interaction.

If you utilize audio or video as part of your website?s content mix, consider including transcripts as part of the post. These transcripts will help search engines better place your website in relevant searches.

Though SEO does have layers of complexity that are best reserved for professionals, there is no reason to believe that beginners cannot also use this tool to their advantage. Instead of wasting time and money hiring someone else, learn a few simple tips to get your website to the top of the search engines? listings. It may be even easier than you imagined!

Iconic street foods every world traveler must try

While many travelers make it a priority to book a table at Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, some of the best food ? street food ? can be had for a fraction of the cost, in the most unlikely of places. From stainless steel push carts and dubious-looking night market stalls, to kiosks and the backs of bicycles, street food is ubiquitous around the world.

Restoring the Walker House, room-by-room, piece-by-piece - The ...

walkernow

On a quiet back road aptly named for the home?s once wealthy owner, the Walker House can be seen hidden by old bushes and trees. Surrounded by the remains of a wrought iron fence, the five story high mansion, built in 1815 is now going through a rebirth. This house is not a museum (though it could be), but the warm and kid-friendly home of Bill and Marya Doyle and their two sons, Liam (age 11) and Cylas (age 8).

The stately manor was the summer home of Colonel Charles C.B. Walker, a prestigious business man from Corning, NY, and well connected political figure. He once served as the Postmaster of Corning, NY and as a Congressman in the 44th Congress. Walker owned a modern hardware store and was an investor in the early railroads.

According to a relative, it is rumored that President Grant once attended an elaborate dinner party given at the home.

It was thought that Walker family lost their fortune in the Silver Crash in the 1900s. The house was the only asset left to pass on to family. It was later given to Isabel Walker Drake, C.C.B.?s eldest daughter.

While the home lay vacant from the 1940?s until the last 60?s, partiers would often take advantage of its non-occupancy. Little mementos of parties past, such as cigarette burns on wood sills and banisters remain. Bill Doyle feels that partiers must have known how special the home was, because they never really trashed and damaged the home. ?I think they were actually respectful of its history,? said Bill.

Mark Vande, a local architect was deeply committed to preserving the history of the home. He brought the house when his wife, Kass, saw it falling into disrepair, and hoped they could buy it and restore it. They did just that in 1969 from a local farmer and the work began. Living out of a somewhat attached trailer home, the family worked nearly two years, before occupying a portion of it. They grew into the home as it was lovingly restored.

Kasha Vande was born in 1969 before the home was bought. Marya was born in 1971 and moved into the Palmyra home as it eventually became more livable, room-by-room,
Growing up in the restored home, Marya and sister Kasha could not leave their house until after dinner, about 6 pm, being expected to help work to clean and update their home. ?I was so used to it. It was a part of our everyday lives. We learned a lot about electrical, painting, repairs,? said Marya. ?We cleaned baseboards and intricate wood carvings on the wall with toothbrushes. We just grew up with it,? she added.?

Bill and Marya met at the Sodus Yatch Club (he was her boss) in 1995. They married at the Walker House and had their reception on the grounds.

When they eventually moved back to the area after 8 years in Virginia, the Doyles knew they wanted a similar home to their restored Victorian home in Virginia. Eventually they knew it had to be the Walker House. ?We looked at many properties, and it kept coming back to this place,? said Marya. The Doyles bought the house from Mark and Kass Vande in 2003 and have remodeled two bathrooms and added antiques to furnish their historic home. ?Many items are gifts from family, or very inexpensive pieces that I have reupholstered or refinished,? said the self taught and talented interior designer Marya.

Following Mark Vande?s earlier renovations, the Doyles have spent their time in the home doing cosmetic changes and additions. Mark had done electrical, heating and overall architecture on the home, when he and his wife bought it in 1969 from Mr. Hitchcock, a farmer down the road. The Doyles now have 3-1/2 baths, which are used as well as the 5 bedrooms and 7 working wood-burning fireplaces. They heat with a furnace that runs baseboard water heat and they use the fireplaces in their family rooms and bedrooms.

The home has 5 stories including the walk-out basement, that served once as the kitchen and topped by an large attic space- complete with the pine casket which originally carried the remains of C.C.B. Walker to his burial site in Palmyra from Corning. It was filled with many personal items of the Colonel.

The Doyles currently heat and use two of the floors for their living space and fill the home, including the upper floors with beautiful and authentic antiques and period furniture. Their basement is also home to a tombstone, engraved ?Joel Foster, February 2, 1829?. Foster was one of the original founders of Palmyra.

The barn on the property has been rebuilt on the remnants of an older barn, and now houses their 20 chickens (pets). They have begun to sell eggs at a stand in front of their home, calling the stand ?Colonel Walker?s Eggs?. There are remains of a guest house and another barn that served the earlier inhabitants.

None of the home?s original furniture were with the house when Mark and Kass purchased it, but Kass was able to later track down two of the original rockers featured in several old photos of the home. Those were restored, re-caned and are now a focal point of the Doyle?s home.

A huge safe in the current sitting room was moved from Corning to the Palmyra home after Mrs. Walker was robbed. It was moved by rail to the home. While it sits in a prominent spot for display in the sitting room, it is cleverly rigged to house the family TV.

In restoring their home in Virginia, both learned a lot about design and authenticity. Marya took the skills she had learned growing up in the Walker House, such as electrical, plumbing, etc, and pampered the older home back to its original charm.

Kitchen cabinets in the Walker House were custom made to match the wood and patina of the original woodwork.

Iron Art Welders help mend sections of the iron rail fence out front, and after being located in the yard a horse mounting block was moved by bulldozer to the front of the home.
The Doyles have stripped and urethaned the continuous stairs which run from floor to floor. All the brickwork in the house is original.

The Walker Home or Walker Farm (as it is still called) was built in 1815 and currently sits on about 6 acres of land. It originally had 2 stories, and floors and rooms were added over the years. Colonel Walker was not the original owner, but purchased the home for his wife Maria, who had spent many childhood summers in the home of her cousins, the Townsend family. (The house was built by Mr. George Brown, whose widow sold it to Edward Seldon Townsend).

Respect and pride for the grand old home also extends these days to Liam, the Doyle?s 12 year old son. Armed with a metal detector, it is amazing what he finds in special ?digging sites? he has declared on the property. Original pieces of the Walker silverware, keys, buttons, an animal trap, paper dolls, ink bottles, playing cards and many more treasures have been uncovered inside and out. His little brother Cylas showed off a Civil War era sword they had found. An old clay pipe was found at the site of the original 5-seater outhouse.

One of the more recent features that Marya truly appreciates is the wood delivery system to the master bedroom from the main living floor. ?Bill converted the original dumb waiter, using a commercial hoist. I was never so proud of him,? she beamed.

Bill currently works for Dunn and Bradtreet. Together, the Doyles stay involved in the community. They founded a community help organization called ?Green Angels?, when, in 2009 they saw that many parents had toys and clothing that their children had outgrown, and decided to find a need for these items. Now offering more than just toys and clothing, the Green Angels aids families in need with donations of beds, furniture, and other household items. The group served 870 people last year (60-70 their first year). They also print the Wayne County Community Services Guide.

Thread: 2013 tour de wood gathering - Family Woodworking

so, anyone want to start thinking about a tourdewood event for 2013?

I will post my thoughts on this.

Timing-I believe the event should take place sometime in July or early August. Alot of people with children wont have to worry about school, and alot of people work in school systems and its usually a bit easier to get off the summer months. Late august not good, too many kids go back to college.
I also believe the event should be on a saturday, not spread out over a few days. Make it easier for anyone who might offer to host, one day, say 1pm-9pm, wont tie anyone down too long.

Place-this is the tough one. Larrys was a pretty good location, just a bit too far west for alot of east coasters. Maybe 2 events the same day, one out west, one on the right coast.
Something like central PA, might work out decent for alot of people who attended larrys gathering, and perhaps alot more from NY state, jersey, maryland, virginia, west virginia, and parts of new england, can make it in a days ride without needed hotel rooms.
And if rooms are needed, central pa is reasonably priced.
I do not have a problem hosting this event, but I have a 40x100 piece of property with a small house.
My backyard would not handle more than 25-30 people tops, and if it rained, would be very, very crowded in my small home. But, if noone steps up and enough are interested, Id be more than happy to host.

I believe getting the ball rolling now, will give alot of people time to make arrangements, and come meet alot of fellow woodworkers, spend a day, eat and drink, relax.

there are lots of things that can be planned.

heres a few going through my head.

The event will not be cheap. If someone with a piece of land offers to host, I feel everyone who intends to go, mail someone designated on this site lets say 10 dollars, then that one person can foward the money to the host, to help offset the cost of staging this event on their property.
(understand, Im not asking for money if people are willing to travel to Long Island it would be my pleasure to host and invite fellow FWW members, but I cant speak for anyone else, so to me, whats fair is fair.)

Maybe if people attending vote on things, we can have a sort of grab bag, everyone brings a 5 or 10 dollar item, wraps it, and everyone picks one so everyone gets something. maybe a bit childish, but I know I like little dooodads, and Im sure it would be fun.

If members attending want, we can have thread devoted to just items that people want to swap, sell, show off, whatever, list the items, and let the games begin.

maybe some members could offer up some of their wares as giveaways, like when mack gave away a pen, maybe a board maker could offer up a board, if I attend Id be happy to offer up a set of chairs as a giveawy.

this is touchy, but perhaps someone here with some PR experience can speak with some companies, and although we dont advertise any company, we will make mention of any company's generosity if they offer up a few freebies for the members that attend, and wed be more than happy to post pictures.
there are 1000s of hard core woodworkers on this site, wed appreciate any freebies.
(this all has to be cleared with management, this is only my ideas)

food-this is way up in the air. The host will make those decisions, but with plenty of time in advance, anyone can email the host and mention if they have any special dietary needs. Not a big deal, but maybe more people would feel a bit more comfortable in attending.

It would be nice to have some of the younger members here attend, bring the kiddies, maybe the host has a pool, or a park nearby.

there are alot of things that can make this another great event like the one at larrys, so members have to chime in and most of all, start posting you like the idea and will attend so we get some kind of idea.
Maybe someone can post a poll thread, leave it up for a month or so to see if wed get enough interest.

I know its the holiday season, and alot of people have alot of other things on their minds, but to plan and plan it right, now is the time to start tossing ideas out here.

think it over, please respond here and come up with ideas.

anyone who is interested in hosting an event like this on either coast, or even middle of the country, please speak up.

2 more things-
I would have no problem hosting. None at all. I live in south nassau county Long Island NY, Im 45 minutes from George Washington bridge, and 40 minutes from Verrazano bridge so you have an idea.

I already have a menu planned out if I host, nothing fancy at all, if you expect steak, you will be dissapointed. Some 6 foot heros, some baked ziti, NY pizza, salads, trimmings, chips, dips, fruit, (if kids attend, I will have a popcorn machine, maybe a slushy machine, candy to keep them wired all day, Id kick up the grill to make them hot dogs and burgers, and Id make sure my son would hook up one of the new TV systems with dozens of games so they can keep busy if they dont want to go to the park.
Like I said, would be nice to see some of the younger members attend also. (Id also have no problem with anyone wanted to stay a bit later and Id offer up an outdoor movie night, after 9pm, on a 12 foot screen, just has to be a family oriented movie)

I own a tiny house, but I have one bedroom free, can put air mattresses in there(Only a twin bed), and I can clean out the other spare bedroom and get a mattress in there, and I have a small den that can hold a mattress or two.
There are plenty of hotels near me, but Im sure july august on a saturday night the prices are ridiculous.

ok, Ive put whats on my mind out there, if there is enough interest over the next month, we can start planning something.

my wife is on board with this, so I have enough help with her and my children getting things set up over here.

please remember, these are my ideas, and no way represent the owners of this site. this all has to be cleared with management, something i brought up with other moderators an administrators.

Ofcom Details UK Framework to Support White Space Wireless ...

Ofcom UK has today proposed a new framework to support the future use of White Space (IEEE 802.22) based wireless broadband technology on a licence exempt basis. The new service harnesses unused radio spectrum, which exists between Digital TV channels (470MHz to 790MHz), to deliver wifi style connectivity over a wide area.

The communications regulator said that its new framework was intended to help govern (regulatory requirements and technical specifications) the overall operation of white space devices in the United Kingdom and to ensure that ?we can manage the risks of harmful interference to the existing users of the [Digital TV or Microphone spectrum]?.

The low frequency spectrum used by White Space tech is particularly useful because it travels further and more easily through walls, although TV channels and related radio spectrum policy do have a tendency to change. As a result any related devices would need to be ?location-aware? and include the technically tedious ability to contact a remote database in order to adapt to the latest spectrum availability data for any given location.

Ed Richards, Ofcoms CEO, said:

?From rural broadband to enhanced Wi-Fi, white space technology offers significant opportunities for innovation and enterprise in the UK.

It also represents a fundamentally different approach to using spectrum by searching and recycling unused gaps in the airwaves. This could prove critical in averting a global spectrum capacity crunch, as consumers demand more bandwidth over different devices.?

Ofcom added that such database-assisted operation could ?also be a key enabling technology for the efficient and dynamic sharing of spectrum in a variety of frequency bands? beyond White Space, which is an interesting prospect for the future.

At the end of last year the Cambridge TV White Spaces Consortium (Arqiva, BBC, BSkyB, BT, Microsoft, Neul, Nokia, Samsung and Virgin Media) estimated that around 600,000 UK homes and businesses in isolated rural areas could potentially get broadband internet access via ?cheap? White Space solutions. It could also be used to enhance existing WiFi networks or for Machine-to-Machine communications (e.g. Smart Meters).

But so far the technology has yet to find its feet in any particular direction. White Space trials (here and here) conducted by BT and others have shown that the technology can work and does deliver broadband speeds of average quality (technically up to 22Mbps per channel) over a fairly wide area (around 10km), although there are no firm plans to adopt it for such purposes. Meanwhile Microsoft and Google would apparently prefer to use it as a free wifi service for Smartphones, although once again there are no firm plans.

Ofcom?s consultation will remain open until 10th January 2013 and only after that will we begin to see any clear direction for the commercial exploitation of White Space services. In theory the first services could then launch before 2014.
