Grand slam caps amazing 6-run rally by D-backs

Arizona comes back after being down 5 runs with 1 out left on Roberts' walkoff HR

Ryan Roberts celebrates after hitting a walk-off grand slam during the 10th inning.

PHOENIX - Ryan Roberts did his best Kirk Gibson impersonation, pumping his fist in triumph as he rounded the bases in one of the most amazing moments of Arizona's improbable season, and the Diamondbacks' skipper didn't mind at all.

"Some things rub off," Gibson said. "He deserved to do it."

Roberts' grand slam capped a six-run 10th inning that gave the Diamondbacks the most stunning of their 48 come-from-behind victories this season, a 7-6 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.

"That was unbelievable," Roberts said. "I've never been a part of something like that. Everything on this team blows my mind."

The Dodgers had scored five runs in their half of the 10th and retired the first two batters in Arizona's half of the inning.

But the Diamondbacks loaded the bases, with the help of reliever Blake Hawksworth's failure to cover first base, and scored a run on an error. Los Angeles closer Javy Guerra (2-1) came on and walked in a run, then Roberts lined the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field. It was Guerra's second blown save in 23 tries.

"Hawks not covering first opens the door," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "From there anything happens. We basically gave them an extra out and that cost us."

As Roberts rounded the bases he pointed toward the Arizona dugout and pumped his fist again and again in an imitation of Gibson's famous home run trot after his game-ending shot for the Dodgers in the 1988 World Series. He had been planning it all year.

"I've never hit a walkoff home run before in my whole career," Roberts said. "I finally got to do it. I'm glad I remembered" to do the Gibson home run trot.

Micah Owings (8-0) got the victory despite his awful 10th, which included his throwing error that allowed the first run to score.

"He gives up five runs and ends up getting a win out of it," Gibson said. "It's been that kind of year."

The victory keeps alive Arizona's hopes to open the first round of the playoffs at home. For that to happen, Milwaukee must lose to Pittsburgh and the Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers in their regular-season finales on Wednesday night.

Nearly all of the crowd had left after the Dodgers had taken a 6-1 lead in the 10th.

Dee Gordon, who was 3 for 5 with an RBI single, doubled to lead off the inning, then Jerry Sands laid down a sacrifice bunt. Owings, the seventh Arizona pitcher, fielded the ball and threw wild past third base, where he had no chance to get the speedy Gordon anyway.

After Gordon scored, Matt Kemp and James Loney had RBI doubles. A.J. Ellis tripled off the fence in right field, with the ball hitting outfielder Justin Upton in the head. Upton, who had sat out the previous game after being beaned by San Francisco's Tim Lincecum, went into a crouch and was attended to by a trainer, then left the game.

Gibson said he took Upton out as a precaution and was sure he wasn't hurt. He even joked about it.

"At least it didn't bounce off his head and go over the fence," Gibson said. "We got a break there, too, I guess."

After Hawksworth got two routine outs to start the bottom of the inning, he had a 2-2 count on Cole Gillespie when the Arizona batter hit a grounder to first, and the pitcher failed to cover the base.

"I didn't pick up where that ball was until it was too late," Hawksworth said. "I threw the pitch and finished looking down. It was just too late. He runs too well to do that. I can't do that. It was my fault. it should have been an out. You put guys on base stuff like that can happen."

Miguel Montero singled, then Chris Young walked to load the baases. Pinch-hitter John McDonald hit a hard grounder to third that Aaron Miles muffed for an error. That was it for Hawksworth, as Mattingly went to his closer to wrap things up.

Lost in the wild finish was the superb major league debut of Arizona's Jarrod Parker, who didn't allow a run in 5 1-3 innings. Hideki Kuroda, 14 years older than the 22-year-old Parker, blanked the Diamondbacks for six innings.

The Dodgers broke a scoreless tie on Gordon's RBI single off reliever Alberto Castillo in the seventh. Rod Barajas singled with one out, then Jamey Carroll walked. Eugenio Valez, pinch-running for Barajas, took third on a fielder's choice, then scored on Gordon's single. Gordon was out trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Arizona responded immediately. Young drew a leadoff walk from Matt Guerrier in the seventh, then scored from first on Lyle Overbay's double over the head of center fielder Kemp.

Parker, the ninth overall pick in the 2007 draft, allowed four hits, struck out one and walked one.

Kuroda allowed five hits and struck out five, with no walks.

Notes: Upton was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and is 2 for 18 in his career against Kuroda. ... The Diamondbacks are scheduled to send LHP Joe Saunders (12-12, 3.58 ERA) to the mound Wednesday, while the Dodgers go with LHP Ted Lilly (11-14, 4.12). ... Gibson said the team will have Thursday off, then work out Friday in whatever city that will host the division series opener. ... If the Diamondbacks and Milwaukee finish tied in the standings, Arizona holds the tiebreaker by winning the season series 4-3.

Sell Your Web Traffic Via PPC And Earn Money For Every User Click ...

Web traffic is the key to success online. With a large number of unique visitors, you can grow your site from a hobby into a business. But you have to know where to start on your journey toward monetization. Websites can be very lucrative, but they won?t stay that way if you don?t focus first and foremost on the quality of your content. Sure, you may be able to pull a few tricks with your search engine optimization to get yourself listed high for one or two days, but the moment that people find out you have nothing of value is the moment that you can say goodbye to that notoriety almost as instantly as it came. To really have a site that succeeds, you need to know what you are talking about and have a way of expressing that to the audience that compels them to come back for more and to recommend your site to other friends.

After you have developed the right content scheme and paid particularly close attention to the targeted keywords, you need to enroll in a pay per click advertising campaign. The PPC model can make you money 24 hours per day and 7 days per week without any fear of letting up. As long as the content, the keywords, and the traffic are there, PPC can change your life forever. With PPC, businesses pay you each time someone clicks on one of their ads through your website. People do not even have to buy anything!

The reason that many sites are using this model is that it is mostly a hands free way of earning money. While you still have to make sure that your site is the best that it can be, you don?t have to worry about devising the advertising message, testing it out to see which one becomes a control, or a most often clicked message. You also don?t have to worry about billing or shipping or any of the rest of that stuff. The advertiser usually develops the ad, but may use the help of a service to craft one that works. From there, the PPC campaign searches out websites like yours to get the message out to their target audience. As long as you?ve opted in to display ads, you can rest easy knowing that the visitors of your site are seeing ads they will most likely feel compelled to click on. From there, earning money is a breeze.

Of course, to get the most money out of your blog or website, you will want to explore other revenue options, so to maximize the full potential. But most businesses that succeed do so on passive income, and PPC is passive at its finest.

Germans and the Euro: Can't Live With It, Can't Live Without It (Time.com)

Updated: Sept. 28, 2011 at 3.45am ET

If it's the big picture you're after, Frankfurt is the only destination in Germany. Most German cities are low-rise, fashioned from timber, stone and brick, though concrete and steel have been widely deployed to plug gaps left by Allied bombing raids. But the city on the Main didn't just repair and restore. It reached for the sky, and in the process helped to power the Wirtschaftswunder, Germany's postwar economic miracle. "Bankfurt" or "Mainhattan," nicknames coined as shining towers rose up to accommodate the core of Germany's financial services industry, is home to the world's fifth largest stock exchange, the national or European headquarters of 218 banks, a thicket of hedge funds and major insurance companies and the Deutsche Bundesbank, Germany's central bank.

It was also the natural choice for the location of the headquarters of the European Central Bank (ECB), responsible for monetary policy in the euro zone and now struggling after emergency bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal and amid fears over Italy and Spain and of Greek default - an economic pileup that threatens the existence of the European currency itself, and one which ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet has called "the worst crisis since World War II." Like that war, the crisis threatens havoc on a global scale, visiting destructive forces not only on Germany itself and the 16 other countries signed up to the euro but on the rest of Europe and Europe's largest trading partners, including the U.S. and China. (See 25 people to blame for the financial crisis.)

Now as then, Germany is at the epicenter. "The euro is much, much more than a currency. The euro is the guarantee of a united Europe. If the euro fails, then Europe fails," Chancellor Angela Merkel told her parliament on Sept. 7. But what Merkel has been more reluctant to acknowledge is that Germany, as the biggest player in the euro zone, has no choice but to determine the fate of the euro zone, whether by doing a lot or doing not very much at all. On Sept. 29, parliament will vote on expanding the bailout fund, raising Germany's contribution from $168 billion to $287 billion, almost half the total. The measure is expected to squeak through, but won't be enough to restore confidence and stability. That requires a fundamental change in the way the euro zone operates.

And Germany is in the hot seat. After two world wars in the first half of the 20th century, the European project tamed German national ambitions. Saving the project appears to require Germany to do the very things the E.U.'s creators aimed to prevent: take a dominant role in Europe and stamp out many remaining national quirks. For the euro to survive, the thinking goes, the profligate peoples of the weaker euro zone countries have to be made to behave like sensible Germans. "It was expected with the start of European Monetary Union that peer pressure would work, but it has not worked," says J?rgen Stark, the ECB's former chief economist, who spoke to TIME just hours after abruptly resigning his post on Sept. 9, panicking already jittery markets. Stark, Germany's top representative at the bank, cited personal reasons but the move was widely interpreted as a protest against the bank's policy of buying sovereign debt to prop up ailing euro zone economies. (See pictures of the global financial crisis.)

The sickest of these economies is Greece, a favored holiday destination among Germans, which has become something of a pariah among Frankfurters. "I'm fed up with working hard so the Greeks can sit in cafes and drink coffee with brandy all day," grumbles Uli, who hawks traditional beer steins to business-minded Frankfurt's rare tourists. "We're slaving while Greece parties," agrees Jens, a sausage vendor whose stand proclaims his product as "the best Wurst in town." He advocates letting the euro - and even the European Union - dissolve like fat on a griddle. At 28, he feels Germany "worries too much about history and too little about the future."

On the upper floors of Frankfurt's highrises, Germany's central bankers, financial chiefs and corporate masters understand how alluring that point of view can be, and why that means it's even more vital that Germany remain anchored in Europe. "The viewpoint from a German taxpayer's perspective is 'Why should I write a check to Greece if I don't know if the money will ever come back?'" says Martin Blessing, CEO of Commerzbank, Germany's second largest financial institution. "Germany underwent significant restructuring efforts over the last 10 years, which was tough. All our labor costs basically stayed the same, but in Greece they increased." Yet Blessing says this overlooks Germany's role as Greece's eager enabler. "We exported a lot of products to Greece. In effect we as an economy gave them a vendor loan. The exporter gives credit to the importer hoping that it will be repaid later."

A Greek default would put an end to those hopes for repayment - and has raised fears over the entire future of the euro. The common currency faces a dual threat: from weaker countries, who could choose to exit rather than undergo the painful, radical restructuring demanded of them, and from stronger nations such as Germany, who may opt out because the cost of staying in the currency threatens to outweigh the benefits of membership. But while the euro zone bailouts are onerous, membership still has great benefits in the form of a substantially weaker currency, which is essential to an exporting nation, and Germany's relatively robust economy is built on its exports, more than 40% of which go to other euro zone countries. The last thing Germany wants is to be lumbered with a strong currency, which it would undoubtedly get if the country tried to go it alone. "We have to think about what it would mean to exit the euro. What would happen in a scenario in which a reintroduced Deutschmark appreciated for example 30% within three months?," says Blessing. "How would that affect German exports and the country's workforce?"

That concern is shared by Isabel and Tobias Hahn, cousins who jointly run the family-owned Glasbau Hahn, a glassworks in the suburbs of Frankfurt. As an example of Germany's traditional small and medium-sized Mittelstand companies, it reflects the nation's economic strengths - and its vulnerabilities. The company makes display cases for museums - commissions have included the vitrines covering Tutankhamun's mummy in Luxor, Egypt and Abraham Lincoln's hair at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry - as well as louvered windows and specialist glasswork. Only the third, and lowest-volume, group of products and services is aimed at the local market. Demand for museum glass has been up and down; after the doldrums of the 2008 financial crisis, a profitable 2010 has been practically erased by the Japanese tsunami and the revolution in Egypt, which caused the cancellations of substantial projects in both countries.

See TIME's Pictures of the Week.

See the Cartoons of the Week.

Demand for louvered windows is holding up better. Isabel's father, who used to run the company initially resisted developing the product line which he thought too ugly. After pressure from clients he built a prototype to prove its aesthetic deficiencies and showed it at trade fair. It was a surprise hit. "My father always says, the bad ideas come up trumps and the good ones never work," she says.

That description might be also said to fit the single currency, although the directors of Glasbau Hahn still consider the euro a good idea that could and must be made to work. "If Europe slides back into individual currencies, then I don't believe it will be possible to maintain the continent's living standards or economic strength," says Tobias. (See why it's make up or break up time for the Euro Zone.)

Germany's labor market remains strong, with unemployment standing at 7%, but economic growth has stalled and government debt is mounting. Tensions in the governing coalition are worsening. After parliamentary elections in 2009, Merkel's Christian Democrats and Bavarian sister party the CSU formed a coalition with the Free Democratic Party (FDP), an economically liberal party that presents itself as the champion of the Mittelstand. The constellation was expected to be able to govern more decisively than Merkel's previous "grand coalition" with the Social Democrats (SPD). The opposite has proved true. Poor results in state elections have increased friction between the governing parties and dissidence within their own ranks. On Sept. 18, the FDP chalked up its worst result since World War II in the Berlin state election, losing its representation in the state parliament. Merkel's own party performed badly too.

If that weren't enough to instill extra caution in Germany's characteristically cautious Chancellor, there's the legacy of Germany's expansionist history to contend with. Gunther Hellmann, a political scientist at Frankfurt's Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University, says, "you instantly gather the connotations that come along in the German context when you're talking about 'F?hrung' - leadership." Hellmann says she's in a no-win situation. "If you take leadership, and tell others 'this is where we should go,' there will be outcry," He says. "If you proceed carefully, it's 'no leadership from Germany.'"

Ironically, if Merkel is to lead euro zone countries to safety, her first duty is arguably not to expand German sway but to cede further power to the European Union and to persuade other nations to do the same. "With the European Union, we Europeans have realized a dream for ourselves. We live in peace and freedom. That naturally entails giving up some powers to Brussels, which isn't always pleasant," Merkel told TIME in an interview at the end of 2009. "But it's necessary. The greatest consequence of globalization is that there aren't any purely national solutions to global challenges." She did not foresee how severe those challenges might be or how many powers she might be called upon to cede if the euro zone is to remain intact. It has become clear that the single currency can only work if there is a greater degree of fiscal and political union among its 17 members.

The break-up of the euro zone is a prospect so chilling to Washington that U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner traveled to Poland earlier this month to urge European finance ministers to step up their response to the crisis. "They recognized the need to escalate. They're going to have to put a much more powerful financial framework behind this," he told ABC News in a Sept. 26 interview. But although markets surged on Sept. 27 after a meeting between Merkel and Greek President George Papandreo amid talk of a new rescue plan, its outlines are hazy and dealt a blow to Merkel's chances of winning the Sept. 29 vote to ratify the existing plan as members of her government balked at the idea of heftier commitments further down the line. And any plan - whether it involves pooling powers or dipping deeper into pockets - will have to be ratified by national parliaments.

Stark, the ECB's outgoing Chief Economist, offers a deceptively simple prescription for breaking the logjam. "We have always made good progress in European integration when European politicians set targets and exact dates," he says. "This worked with the single market in 1993. There was a target to achieve the single market in 1993. And then with the single currency which started in 1999. So why not set new targets, be more ambitious?" His proposal: the 17 euro zone countries should "move ahead, leaving others behind" in the push for integration, perhaps appointing a joint finance minister. (See "Don't Let the Stock Market Rally Fool You: The Euro Hasn't Been Fixed.")

That's the sort of big idea that it's easy to deliver from above. On the streets of Frankfurt, it's a harder sell. "They say we have to save this," says Jens, the sausage seller, holding up a euro coin. "I say, Tell me how many of these it will cost me to save this. And they can't answer."

eBay Waging War Against an Internet Sales Taxes

Apparently eBay wants to spread the word that it opposes an Internet sales tax. I wrote my eCommerce Times Legal Column recently about Internet sales taxes entitled ?Sales Taxes on the Internet: Is This the Year We?ll Pay?? I suspect that as a result of my Column, eBay?s PR firm sent me the following email with a list of quotes in opposition to an Internet sales tax:

eBay Opposes Legislation Imposing New Taxes and Regulatory Burdens on Small Online Businesses

Brian Bieron, Senior Director, Federal Government Relations and Global Public Policy at eBay Inc., made the following statement upon the introduction of ?Main Street Fairness Act? bills by Senator Durbin (D-IL) and Representative Conyers (D-MI).

"A collection of state tax commissioners have again been able to get an outdated Internet sales tax bill introduced in Congress, but we are confident that it will be rejected because it would harm small Internet retailers. Better policy is reflected by H.Res. 95 from Congressman Dan Lungren (R-CA) and Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) with 27 bipartisan co-sponsors, which says that Congress won?t give states ?the authority to impose unfair tax collecting requirements on small online businesses.?

"The giant retailers jockeying for new Internet sales taxes have national store networks that they combine with their major online sales platforms, a business model they know brings some tax collection duties. Forcing small businesses to take on the same costs and tax burdens as national retail businesses is unrealistic, unfair and will unbalance the playing field between giant retailers and small business retailers on the Internet."

The heat is on, so stay tuned for a hot summer and war against the Internet sales tax.

'Glee'-Cap: Kurt Embraces His Inner Unicorn

But does he really have to face off against boyfriend Blaine for the lead in the play?
By Jim Cantiello

Chris Colfer in "Glee"
Photo: FOX

"Glee" was back to its identity-crisis ways Tuesday, switching up ages, story lines and emotions in the latest episode, "I Am Unicorn." But why talk about it when we can sing about it? To the musical "Glee"-cap!

I wish "Glee" made up its mind
They change the rules and it's unkind
Ryan Murphy first told the press that Blaine's older
But now he is a year behind

It's hard to keep my bearings straight
And oh, how it makes my heart ache
Kurt and Blaine were gonna move to New York together
But now they'll have to wait

F--- you, "Glee," this makes no sense
You're messing with my Klaine and I'm incensed
Now they're rivals for the lead in the play
If only Kurt can tone down the gay

No way!

Screw you, "Glee," why hurt your fans?
I need a Ph.D. in bullsh-- to understand
The show can't be fantasy
While also grounded in harsh reality
That means a battle over custody
Doesn't appeal to me

Just sayin'

Another chorus has begun
Sugar's dad supplies the funds
Don't get too attached, you know what'll happen
By November she'll be gone
[cough] Charice [cough]

We are Gleeks, we see it all!
You can't pull a fast one between spring and fall
Last year Bieste talked gender themes
Now she's laughing at Kurt for being a queen — puh-leaze!

Damn you, "Glee," in the end you're right
The big music numbers shined oh so bright
Rachel singing with her estranged mom
Holy crap, look at his arms!

Kurt's audition's full of charm
And so plucky!
He's a bendable son of a gun
Blaine's so lucky!

I get it, "Glee" writers, you need conflict
Just make it consistent and I'll give a sh--
One last request: Make Shelby go away

Entitled Gleek!

What did you think of the latest "Glee"? Let us know in the comments below — no singing required!

Longtime fugitive US hijacker caught in Portugal (AP)

NEWARK, N.J. ? A convicted killer who escaped a New Jersey prison in 1970, then hijacked a U.S. airliner two years later, has been captured in Portugal.

The FBI says George Wright was arrested Monday by Portuguese authorities at the request of the U.S. government.

Wright was convicted of the 1962 murder of a gas station owner in Wall, N.J. Eight years later, he and three other men escaped from the Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, N.J.

The FBI says Wright became affiliated with the Black Liberation Army and in 1972 he and his associates hijacked a Delta flight from Detroit to Miami. After releasing the passengers in exchange for a $1 million ransom, the hijackers forced the plane to fly to Boston, then on to Algeria.

Wright was the last remaining fugitive.

Australia report: Aborigines have higher STD rates (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? Aborigines suffer far higher rates of sexually transmitted disease than other Australians despite being targeted by safe sex initiatives such as Outback trees being festooned with free condoms, a report showed Tuesday.

Aborigines were diagnosed with gonorrhea at a rate of 804 per 100,000 last year ? almost 27 times higher than the rate of 30 per 100,000 in the wider Australian community, the University of New South Wales' Kirby Institute reported to a sexual health conference.

The diagnosis rate of infectious syphilis was five times higher among Aborigines than other Australians and chlamydia was more than three times higher.

The disease rates add to the range of grim statistics that mark Aborigines as Australia's most disadvantaged ethnic group. Aborigines make up 2.3 percent of Australia's population and die more than a decade younger than other Australians. Aborigines are more likely to suffer a multitude of illnesses that are often associated with impoverished lifestyles.

James Ward, an Aborigine who heads the Kirby Institute's indigenous health program, blamed several factors for the STD rates remaining stubbornly high among Aborigines for more than 20 years.

He noted the Aboriginal population is far younger than the Australian average and STDs disproportionately infect younger people. The rates were worst among Aborigines aged 16-to-19 years and in remote Outback communities where a quarter of Aborigines live.

He said Aborigines also lacked knowledge about STDs and health workers often focused on more pressing health needs in their disease-ravaged communities.

Ward said coordinating a national health campaign against these diseases was difficult in the Outback, where people often live in remote areas.

Outback Aboriginal settlements have been encouraging young people to use condoms without the embarrassment or expense of buying them for more than a decade by creating so-called condom trees.

Under the program, health workers hang brightly painted canisters decorated with indigenous designs and full of condoms from trees where people can pocket them anonymously.

Ward said he still believed the condom trees were working.

The study found that the rate of HIV infections among Aborigines is not much higher than Australia's national average, which is relatively low by international standards. Aborigines had an HIV diagnosis rate of 4.6 per 100,000 last year, compared to a national rate of 4 per 100,000.

Hands on with the Galaxy Tab 8.9

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9

Samsung took the wraps off of its Galaxy Tab 8.9 tonight in New York City, the latest product in its ever-growing Galaxy line. Shoneel Kolhatkar, Samsung's Director of Product Planning, said that the 8.9 "hits the sweet spot ... between screen real estate and compact size," and we tend to agree. First thing you'll notice is that on paper, a little more than an inch doesn't seem like a whole lot of difference between the newest Galaxy tablet and it's big brother, the Galaxy Tab 10.1. However in your hand, the two products are radically different. The 8.9 will be the perfect product for those who find the 10.1 to be just a bit too large.

Other than its smaller footprint, there isn't much more to say about the Galaxy Tab 8.9, as it shares the same hardware and software as the already reviewed Galaxy Tab 10.1. Same Tegra 2 processor, same 1 GB RAM, same Honeycomb 3.1, and the same version of TouchWiz. If you've even peeked at anything that's been said about the 10.1, you'll know what to expect in the 8.9.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be available nationwide on October 2: the 16 GB model will set you back $469, while the 32 GB model will cost $569. Some hands on photos, which include a comparison with the Galaxy Tab 10.1, are after the break.

NASA gives 1-hour window for falling satellite (AP)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? A 6-ton NASA satellite on a collision course with Earth clung to space Friday, apparently flipping position in its ever-lower orbit and stalling its death plunge.

The old research spacecraft was targeted to crash through the atmosphere sometime Friday night or early Saturday, putting Canada and Africa in the potential crosshairs, although most of the satellite should burn up during re-entry. The United States wasn't entirely out of the woods; the possible strike zone skirted Washington state.

"It just doesn't want to come down," said Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

McDowell said the satellite's delayed demise demonstrates how unreliable predictions can be. That said, "the best guess is that it will still splash in the ocean, just because there's more ocean out there."

Until Friday, increased solar activity was causing the atmosphere to expand and the 35-foot, bus-size satellite to free fall more quickly. But late Friday morning, NASA said the sun was no longer the major factor in the rate of descent and that the satellite's position, shape or both had changed by the time it slipped down to a 100-mile orbit.

"In the last 24 hours, something has happened to the spacecraft," said NASA orbital debris scientist Mark Matney.

On Friday night, NASA said it expected the satellite to come crashing down between 11:45 p.m. and 12:45 a.m. EDT Saturday. It was going to be passing over the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans at that time, as well as Canada and Africa.

"The risk to public safety is very remote," NASA said in a statement.

Any surviving wreckage is expected to be limited to a 500-mile swath.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, will be the biggest NASA spacecraft to crash back to Earth, uncontrolled, since the post-Apollo 75-ton Skylab space station and the more than 10-ton Pegasus 2 satellite, both in 1979.

Russia's 135-ton Mir space station slammed through the atmosphere in 2001, but it was a controlled dive into the Pacific.

Some 26 pieces of the UARS satellite ? representing 1,200 pounds of heavy metal ? are expected to rain down somewhere. The biggest surviving chunk should be no more than 300 pounds.

Earthlings can take comfort in the fact that no one has ever been hurt by falling space junk ? to anyone's knowledge ? and there has been no serious property damage. NASA put the chances that somebody somewhere on Earth would get hurt at 1-in-3,200. But any one person's odds of being struck were estimated at 1-in-22 trillion, given there are 7 billion people on the planet.

"Keep in mind that we have bits of debris re-entering the atmosphere every single day," Matney said in brief remarks broadcast on NASA TV.

In any case, finders definitely aren't keepers.

Any surviving wreckage belongs to NASA, and it is against the law to keep or sell even the smallest piece. There are no toxic chemicals on board, but sharp edges could be dangerous, so the space agency is warning the public to keep hands off and call police.

The $740 million UARS was launched in 1991 from space shuttle Discovery to study the atmosphere and the ozone layer. At the time, the rules weren't as firm for safe satellite disposal; now a spacecraft must be built to burn up upon re-entry or have a motor to propel it into a much higher, long-term orbit.

NASA shut UARS down in 2005 after lowering its orbit to hurry its end. A potential satellite-retrieval mission was ruled out following the 2003 shuttle Columbia disaster, and NASA did not want the satellite hanging around orbit posing a debris hazard.

Space junk is a growing problem in low-Earth orbit. More than 20,000 pieces of debris, at least 4 inches in diameter, are being tracked on a daily basis. These objects pose a serious threat to the International Space Station.

The membranes absorb water directly into its structure, then turns the heat from the body and castingMoisture. U.S. looks for links between Kabul, Mumbai attacks (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. agencies are looking into possible similarities between the Sept. 13 attacks on U.S. and NATO targets in Afghanistan, and the November 2008 attack by militants on civilian targets in Mumbai, India.

Current and former U.S. counterterrorism officials told Reuters the comparison between the two attacks was being made as part of the U.S. government's examination of evidence linking the Kabul attack to Pakistan's principal intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence directorate, or ISI.

One point under examination is how phone calls, allegedly to ISI contacts back in Pakistan, were made by militants during the course of both attacks.

There are similarities between the two attacks that suggest an ultra-secret unit of ISI, known as "S" branch, carried out both of them, said Bruce Riedel, a former senior CIA analyst who has advised President Barack Obama on Afghanistan policy.

Top Pakistani officials have publicly denied the U.S. accusations of ISI involvement and warned Washington it risked losing an ally in South Asia.

On Thursday, Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a congressional hearing that the Kabul attacks on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters were carried out by operatives of the Haqqani network, a group of Afghan militants based over the border in Pakistan's tribal regions. The attack killed at least seven people and wounded 19.

Mullen described the Haqqani network as a "veritable arm" of ISI and said the group also carried out a Sept. 10 truck bomb attack in Afghanistan with the "support" of the Pakistani spy agency.

On Thursday, Riedel told Reuters the United States had evidence the attackers in Kabul telephoned people connected with ISI before and during their attack.

Earlier in the week, U.S. officials privately informed senior Pakistani officials visiting the United States that Washington had evidence linking ISI to the Kabul attacks, but declined Pakistani requests to produce the evidence, said a person familiar with discussions between the officials.

Information gathered by U.S. and Indian security and intelligence agencies in the wake of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, in which 166 people died, indicated they were carried out by operatives of Lashkar-e-Taiba, or LeT, a Pakistan-based militant group also with allegedly close ties to ISI.

David Headley, an American militant who allegedly helped LeT scope out targets in Mumbai, gave a lengthy statement to Indian government investigators alleging contacts between LeT and ISI. "According to Headley every big action of LeT is done in close coordination with ISI," India's National Investigation Agency concluded.

The Mumbai attackers traveled to India by boat and laid siege for several days to high-profile civilian targets, including two luxury hotels, a railway station and a Jewish community center. By contrast, the recent attacks in Kabul were land-based and directed at official targets associated with the U.S. and NATO.

The Process of Dying and Crossing Over | Financial Crossing

There was a time that I was afraid of death. As expressed in one of my articles, ?Transitioning and Grief after the Death of a Loved One?, I have experienced many funerals and memorials. The grieving that I witnessed from others taught me that death was a horrible thing. I was born an Empath, which means I am very sensitive towards others and the subtle changes in temperature, light, and noise. I used to think that I worried more about the problems of others than they did. Until I learned to protect myself, I would experience the feelings of others. Therefore, funerals and memorials were extremely painful times for me. I was picking up on the grief of everyone around me.

I have experienced the presence from those on the other side. As a child, I was afraid of the dark. My bedroom was quite busy at night with shadowy movements. When I was 10 or 11 years old, I woke up to a male figure hovering over my bed. I believed he was coming through the window above my bed. I jumped up and ran to my parent?s bedroom, woke up my mother, and told her about the man. She said it was impossible that anyone could get in through the window and dismissed me back to bed. However, I was so afraid that I slept on the cold floor between my parents twin beds that night. Fortunately, my father often worked in the home office well into the night. Having the light shining into my bedroom and knowing he was awake helped me to feel safer and to get better sleep. However, even after I was married, with my husband beside me, there was still activity. Now I just smile when I see spirit activity. I know they come in peace and love. I do not know what the experience of the hovering man was all about. It is possible that he could have been a spirit guide or angel. At that time there wasn?t anyone that I could go to for answers or support.

As an adult I began studying death, how the body transitions, the experiences of others, and various philosophical thoughts. Reading the works of Psychic Sylvia Browne brought me the most comfort. She, along with many other people, believes that our loved ones are not somewhere up in the heavenly skies. They are just in another dimension with a thin veil between their world and ours. I believe it is a beautiful place where everyone is surrounded by peace, good health, and love. They are enjoying themselves, doing whatever it is that they love to do, and anything they desire is at their finger tips. They do not miss us because they can see us whenever they want and time to them is not the same as our time.

It was Monday and I had talked to mom Sunday evening and yet from some reason there was a nagging voice that told me to call her. I went to work and was tired at the end of the day. The voice kept nagging and I kept putting it off. On Wednesday afternoon and I received a phone call at work from a policeman who was calling from my mother?s home. Her mailman noticed that her car was in the driveway and she had not been picking up her mail. He looked in the window, discovered her body, and called the police. My brother reached her home before I did and would not let me into the house. Her body was not in good condition and he did not want that to be my last memory of her. Mom had said many times that she did not want people looking at her dead body. She also said, ?When I die I just want to close my eyes, go to sleep, and wake up in heaven.? It appears that both wishes were honored. All indications lead to the conclusion that she crossed over within hours after our call Sunday night.

I cried while watching two women from the mortuary wheel the body bag out of my mother?s home and carefully place it in the car. After they closed the car door one of the women turned around, put her arms around me, and said, ?Don?t cry she is happy.? I found out later that a friend of mine knew these women and that they were passing on the message from my mom.

As my brother and I worked together to settle mom?s estate, I felt her presence around me. Once the estate was settled she came to me. In this life she had painful knees and walked with a limp. At this visit she twirled around, with a big smile, beautiful luminescent skin, and told me her pain was gone. It was wonderful seeing her so happy and I felt so honored by her presence. I could no longer mourn the loss of my mother because she was so happy. She is in my thoughts everyday and still visits from time to time.

Mom?s passing was unexpected and sudden. However, she had been giving things away for a couple of years. She said she no longer had use for certain things and wanted to see others enjoying them. Giving things away can be a sign of acceptance that they are getting close to the end. (Important Note: This can also be a sign of someone considering suicide and must be taken seriously.) Mom had her will and papers together and showed me where to find everything. The last thing she did on Sunday, before talking to me, was to work the entire day in her yard. I remember her telling me that she was really tired. It was a sunny March day and she had tons of energy. Mom loved flowers and digging in the dirt. However, she had not done much in the later years. As our Mother?s Day gift to her, my sister, brother, friend/spouses, and I would gather with a load of bark dust, gardening gloves, etc. and beautify her yard. My brother and I were amazed as to how much work she had done that day. I have learned that a big spurt of energy is common just prior to passing. Oftentimes people will wake up from a coma looking good, sounding good, and then within minutes they cross.

Five years before my mother crossed over, I sat next to my father?s hospital bed. Unaware that I was there he looked up towards the ceiling and with a big smile on his face said, ?Oh, for goodness sake.? It was as if he were greeting someone that he had not seen in a while. I looked into his eyes and they were the most beautiful blue color I have ever seen. My husband said that the beautiful blue color was a sign of the peace daddy was feeling within. I have since read that the eye color change is common. Daddy stopped eating, which is a sign that the end is near. His living will indicated that he was not to be force feed or resuscitated. Like mom, he closed his eyes and crossed over.

I was not present when my father or mother crossed over. However, many times I have heard that people will set up a death vigil and it is when they step out of the room that their loved one will pass. People oftentimes wait for certain loved ones to arrive or complete some unfinished business before they pass. I had never heard my father say ?I love you.? Although, I knew he loved me, I still longed to hear him say it. A year or so before he got sick I had mentioned this to my mother. She talked to him about it and his reply was, ?She knows I am fond of her.? I said, ?I wonder why can?t say the word love.? A few days before he passed, while sitting beside his hospital bed I whispered ?I love you daddy? and he said, ?I love you too.? He was complete and so was I.

We receive word that Jon?s paternal grandmother was dying and we drove from Portland Oregon to Seattle Washington to see her. She was in bed and as we entered her room she put out her arms to us and taking our hands in hers she said, ?Goodbye.? She didn?t have enough energy to speak much more. When we were half of the way home, I told Jon that his grandmother was gone and that we would be receiving a phone call. Shortly after arriving home the call came. She said goodbye to everyone that she cared about and her business was done.

My aunt Berdine passed on Christmas Day 2009. She was the youngest of mom?s 4 siblings. On Christmas Eve her son, who lived across the street from her, walked in and found her sitting on the side of the bed. She just stared and could not speak. He called 911 and they rushed her to the hospital. Many of us swarmed the hospital. Each of us taking turns to see her. At first they thought she had a stroke then later said it was pneumonia. By the time we arrived she could speak some, yet could not say our name. However, she smiled at me and said, ?I know who you are.? Since it appeared that she was going to be fine, we left the hospital feeling grateful that she got to the hospital in time. She lived in a the very small town of Brightwood Oregon and was loved by many people. There was snow on the ground and yet the memorial service was packed with people who had traveled from many states. I think things happened the way they did to allow time for many of us to see her and tell her we love her before she crossed.

I really believe that there is a wonderful life on the other side. I believe that we begin on the other side and contract to come into this world to experience, learn, and love. It is like going to school, graduating, and living happily ever after. Sylvia and others say that oftentimes we reincarnate to have a different experience with someone we knew from a past life. For instance in a past life you may have been your current parent?s mother or father. My husband Jon and I believe that we have been together a few times before. One psychic told us that we had admired and loved each other from afar as there were circumstances that prevented us from being together. In this lifetime we were both born wise beyond our years, which could be an indication that we are on our last life here.

As I read more of Sylvia?s words about the other side, it was like I was being reminded of something that I once knew. Children are typically are very intuitive. However, as we get older we begin to forget and become reprogrammed unless we are lucky to have someone to support us. When I was about 4-years old my daddy was carrying me into the house from the car and I was thinking, ?I am going to remember this time.? At 4-years old, I was making mental notes of things to remember.

I feel the presence of my parents around me quite often. Mom appears more than daddy and that is how it was when they lived in this time. Daddy was always very busy and I imagine that he is busy on the other side. Daddy was a workaholic and very dedicated to employers. However, providing for his family was his way of loving us. Perhaps he was emulating is father who was a busy pastor. Mom was also very dedicated to her employers. However, spending time with her family was of the highest importance to her. She came from a large family that spent much time sewing, cooking, dancing, celebrating, laughing, and loving each other.

I am no longer afraid of death. Like my mother, I pray that when my time comes it will be a sweet ending. I want to shut my eyes, go to sleep, and wake up at home (on the other side). I know that my loved ones, who have passed before, will be there to greet me. We will have a big celebration for my graduation from the school of life on earth.

    In Loving Support,

    Mel

Common stimulant may speed recovery from general anesthesia

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2011) ? Administration of the commonly used stimulant drug methylphenidate (Ritalin) was able to speed recovery from general anesthesia in an animal study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The report, appearing in the October issue of Anesthesiology, is the first demonstration in mammals of what could be a safe and effective way to induce arousal from general anesthesia. While there are drugs to counteract many of the agents used by anesthesiologists -- such as pain killers and muscle relaxants -- until now there has been no way to actively reverse the unconsciousness induced by general anesthesia.

"Currently at the end of a surgical procedure, the anesthesiologist just lets general anesthetic drugs wear off, and the patient regains consciousness," says Emery Brown, MD, PhD, of the MGH Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, senior author of the paper. "If these findings can be replicated in humans, it could change the practice of anesthesiology -- potentially reducing post-anesthesia complications like delirium and cognitive dysfunction in pediatric and elderly patients."

General anesthesia has been an essential tool of medicine since it was first demonstrated at the MGH in 1846, but only in recent years have researchers begun to investigate the neurobiology of general anesthesia and to understand exactly how anesthetic drugs produce their effects. Studies by Brown and other scientists have shown that the state of general anesthesia is actually a controlled and reversible coma and bears little similarity to natural sleep. Several neurotransmitter pathways in the brain are known to be generally involved in arousal, but which ones may contribute to recovery from general anesthesia is not yet known.

The stimulant drug methylphenidate, widely used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, is known to affect arousal-associated pathways controlled by the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine and histamine. The current study was designed to see whether methylphenidate could stimulate arousal in rats receiving the anesthetic drug isoflurane. The first experiments showed that animals receiving intravenous methylphenidate five minutes before discontinuation of isoflurane recovered significantly faster than did rats receiving a saline injection. Another experiment showed that methylphenidate induced signs of arousal -- movement, standing up, etc. -- in animals continuing to receive isoflurane at a dose that would have been sufficient to maintain unconsciousness. EEG readings taken during that experiment showed that brain rhythms associated with arousal returned within 30 seconds of methylphenidate administration. Giving a drug that interferes with the dopamine pathway blocked the arousal effects of methylphenidate, supporting the role of that pathway in the drug's effects.

"Our results tell us that, even though we don't yet know the precise mechanisms underlying general anesthesia, we can overcome its effects by activating arousal pathways," says Ken Solt, MD, of the MGH Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, the paper's lead and corresponding author. "Instead of the traditional paradigm of reversing drug actions at the molecular level, methylphenidate acts at the level of neural circuits to overcome the effects of isoflurane. Since we still know very little about the pathways involved in general anesthesia, we will be testing the actions of methylphenidate with other anesthetic agents to see if these arousal effects are broadly applicable."

Brown adds, "More precise ways to induce and control the arousal process may lead to strategies that help patients recover from coma. We also found that methylphenidate increased respiration in anesthetized animals, which could help rescue patients who receive too much sedation for simple procedures. And the ability to safely reduce the time patients spend in the operating room -- which can cost between $1,000 and $1,500 an hour -- could translate into significant savings in health costs."

Brown is the Warren M. Zapol Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and a professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. Solt is an assistant professor of Anaesthesia at HMS. Additional co-authors of the Anesthesiology paper are Joseph Cotten, MD, PhD, Aylin Cimenser, PhD, Kin Wong, PhD, and Jessica Chemali, all of the MGH Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. The study was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the MGH Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine.
