(AP) ? The goodwill that Mayor Michael Bloomberg built among Muslims with his support of the planned mosque near ground zero was threatened this week as Islamic religious and civic leaders decried a recently disclosed police effort to gather intelligence on Muslim neighborhoods.

Fifteen Muslim clerics and community figures said they will boycott the mayor's annual interfaith breakfast Friday over the surveillance program, whose existence was revealed in a series of Associated Press articles.

The breakfast, traditionally held at the historic New York Public Library building on 42nd Street, has long served as a way to showcase the city's diversity during the overlapping winter holidays.

"We felt uncomfortable going to have coffee and doughnuts with the mayor knowing that this civil liberties crisis that's affecting all New Yorkers is not going to be addressed," said Imam Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid, president of the Islamic Leadership Council of New York, a group of 35 clerics and their congregations.

He and other Muslim activists and clerics sent a letter to Bloomberg this week turning down their invitations. About three dozen other people signed the letter as supporters, including rabbis, a Roman Catholic nun, Protestant pastors and a Quaker, though it was unclear how many had been invited to the breakfast.

"I couldn't be there while knowing that the mayor supports, if not established, this warrantless spying apparatus," said Hesham El-Meligy, founder of the Building Bridges Coalition of Staten Island.

Activists accused Bloomberg of squandering the goodwill built up last year when he fiercely defended a proposed Islamic prayer and cultural center not far from where the World Trade Center stood. The mosque is still in the planning stages.

Bloomberg had also won praise from Muslim leaders for criticizing anti-Islamic rhetoric and offering words of compassion after fires in the Bronx killed a large Muslim family and destroyed a mosque.

"However, despite these welcome and positive actions, very disturbing revelations have come to light regarding the city's treatment of Muslim New Yorkers," the letter said.

Bloomberg's office has said it expects about two dozen Muslim leaders to attend the breakfast.

"You're going to see a big turnout tomorrow, and it's nice that all faiths can get together," the mayor said Thursday. Boycott participants "are going to miss a chance to have a great breakfast."

He and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly have insisted their counterterrorism programs are legal.

"Contrary to assertions, the NYPD lawfully follows leads in terrorist-related investigations and does not engage in the kind of wholesale spying on communities that was falsely alleged," police spokesman Paul Browne said in an email Thursday.

However, records examined by the AP show the police department collected information on people who were neither accused nor suspected of wrongdoing.

The AP series detailed police department efforts to infiltrate Muslim neighborhoods and mosques with aggressive programs designed by a CIA officer. Documents reviewed by the AP revealed that undercover police officers known as "rakers" visited businesses such as Islamic bookstores and cafes, chatting up store owners to determine their ethnicities and gauge their views. They also played cricket and eavesdropped in ethnic clubs.

The surveillance efforts have been credited with enabling police to thwart a 2004 plot to bomb the Herald Square subway station.

Critics said the efforts amount to ethnic profiling and violate court guidelines that limit how and why police can collect intelligence before there is evidence of a crime. They have asked a judge to issue a restraining order against the police.

Participants in the boycott said they feel betrayed by the city.

"Civic engagement is a two-way street. We've done our part as a community; we're waiting for the city to do their part," said Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab-American Association of New York.

Other Muslim leaders said they disagreed with the boycott.

"I believe that engagement is more important. I think everyone disagrees with the way the NYPD is penetrating the community, but I think generalizing everything else as bad is not appropriate," said Imam Shamsi Ali of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York. "The mayor's not perfect, but there are many things about him we need to appreciate. And I think working with him is a way of appreciation."

The surveillance has revealed deep divisions in the city a decade after 9/11. Many New Yorkers say they empathize with Muslims living under the pall of suspicion, but also support aggressive police efforts against would-be terrorists.

The New York Daily News and New York Post defended the police in editorials this week, with the Daily News calling the AP's reporting "overheated, overhyped."

The AP's senior managing editor, Michael Oreskes, sent a letter to the newspaper Thursday in defense of the news organization.

"These were stories about where our city was drawing the line in protecting New Yorkers from another 9/11 attack," Oreskes wrote. "The stories were based on extensive reporting and documents. It is a journalist's job to report the activities of government. It is up to citizens to decide about those activities."

Breast Cancer Radiation Linked to Raised Heart Risk - Drugs.com ...

TUESDAY Dec. 27, 2011 -- Women who have breast cancer on the left side of the body and who are treated with radiation therapy have a higher risk of developing narrowing of the arteries that lead to the heart, researchers say.

A new Swedish study found that the risk of having moderately narrowed coronary arteries was more than four times greater for women who had left-sided breast cancers treated with radiation compared to right-sided breast cancers treated with radiation. The odds were seven times higher for more severe narrowing on the left side versus the right, according to the study published in the Dec. 27 online edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

"We suggest that the coronary arteries be regarded as organs at risk in radiation therapy, and that every effort be made to avoid radiation dose to the coronary arteries," wrote study authors led by Dr. Greger Nilsson, of the department of oncology, radiology and clinical immunology at Uppsala University Hospital.

However, it's also important to note that of a group of 8,190 women who had breast cancer, just 199 had to be referred for coronary angiography (a treatment for blocked blood vessels).

"Women need to be aware that there is a risk, but the overall risk is still relatively small, and the benefits of radiation in the treatment of breast cancer still outweigh the risks," said Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Cancer treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy, are designed to destroy cancer cells. Unfortunately, healthy cells are often damaged, too. Treatment techniques are constantly being refined, and today's treatments target fewer healthy cells than treatments from years past.

For example, newer radiation techniques help protect the heart and the arteries leading to it, according to Dr. Timothy Zagar, an assistant professor in radiation oncology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. One such technique is to give bursts of radiation only when a patient is taking a deep breath. During a deep breath, the main artery going to the heart separates from the breast and chest wall, which keeps it away from the radiation.

Zagar, co-author of an accompanying editorial in the same issue of the journal, said researchers don't know exactly how radiation causes damage to coronary arteries, but it's believed to damage the cells lining the arteries (endothelial cells), which causes inflammation, which can lead to hardening of the arteries.

The current study included women from Sweden who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1970 and 2003. Of the 8,190 women, the researchers found 199 women who had undergone coronary angiography, suggesting significant coronary artery disease.

Coronary artery narrowing (stenosis) is graded on a scale of zero to 5. Zero indicates a healthy blood vessel, while 5 indicates a blocked blood vessel.

When the researchers compared women who'd had radiation treatment on the left side of their body versus the right, they found that the odds of a grade 3 to grade 5 stenosis in a left-sided artery were 4.38 times higher. The odds of a grade 4 or grade 5 stenosis were 7.22 times higher for women who had left-sided breast cancer.

In women who received radiation in high-risk areas near the heart's arteries, the risk of a grade 3 to grade 5 stenosis was nearly twice as high as it was in women who had radiation in low-risk areas, or who didn't have radiation.

Zagar pointed out that this study was done over a long period of time and that changes in the way radiation is delivered would likely result in lower odds of coronary artery stenosis for women treated with radiation today.

In addition, Zagar said, "I don't think this study's findings would justify changing from a lumpectomy [breast-conserving surgery] to a mastectomy [surgical removal of the breast]. Breast-conserving therapy is very important to many women, and the number of coronary events are still low," he added.

"It's important to understand that with all treatments, there are risks," Bernik said. "And, we know that this is one of the risks with radiation of left-sided breast cancer. Women need to keep in mind that they're at increased risk of coronary events and need to follow up with their doctor going forward."

Kelly Clarkson Endorses Ron Paul, Republicans, Catches Hate on Twitter

Kelly Clarkson got herself into a bit of hot water?OK basically, it was a tidal wave?when she decided to reveal that she?d support Libertarian, Ron Paul in the next presidential election if he won the republican primary.

Yes, that?s right. Kelly says she?s a Republican, although she voted for Obama in the last election.

It all started with an innocent tweet:

I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he?s got my vote. Too bad he probably won?t.

And then, almost immediately, all hell broke loose. Kelly attempted to deal with what appears to be an onslaught of hate tweets:

@msschantz we shouldn?t try & help/tell other countries how to solve their issues w/the poor when we can?t even solve our own.

@QueenVampireX @sexidance I am a Republican but I actually voted Democrat last election.

@deethers I have never heard that he?s a racist? I definitely don?t agree with racism, that?s ignorant.

@BarkingTurtles I love all people and could care less if you like men or women. I have never heard that Ron Paul is a racist or homophobe?

@my_warden I have never seen or heard Ron Paul say anything against gay people?

@Jcourt3 I respect your opinion and I am about progress. Ron Paul is about letting people decide, not the government. I am for this.

@Cibuloid Very mature of you. Someone says something you disagree with and you lash out at them.

(Singer, Michelle Branch, tweeted her response, ?@kelly_clarkson I wholeheartedly agree. #RonPaul?)

@uglybenny @michellebranch classy response.

I am really sorry if I have offended anyone. Obviously that was not my intent. I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women?s rights, men?s rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he?s my favorite.

@LoveUMore because you don?t agree with me, I?m stupid. Very mature response.

@MauricioDelRey Man, seriously such hate coming from your tweets. This isn?t a healthy way to be heard. Say what you?d like without the hate

@infinityguitarz I don?t believe in the death penalty. Most Republicans do but not me.

@judeinlondon this is demeaning & rude, please don?t waste any more of your time and don?t follow me if you are going to continue like this

Man my eyes have been opened to so much hate tonight. If y?all ever disagree with something I say please don?t feel the need to attack me. I will listen to what you say and any articles or viewpoints you have when you say it with respect. Being hateful is not a healthy way to get people to see or hear you. I was raised to respect people and their decisions and beliefs and I hope you will grant me the same decency. If you don?t agree with me simply unfollow me. It?s really that easy. I hope you don?t because I would love the chance to hear what you have to say but if you?re so blinded by hate you can?t seek peace and progress then that is your unfortunate prerogative.

Some of the responses to Kelly:

@MattOrtega:? Pop singers for Paul? Way to show how little you know about him. RT @michellebranch: @kelly_clarkson I wholeheartedly agree. #RonPaul

@NerdyHBIC:? Wow @kelly_clarkson is looking really dumb right now, supporting Ron Paul aka blatantly racist LOLbetarian GOP candidate. #oop

@Ben_Howe: You have to figure @kelly_clarkson would be a fan of a candidate that constantly gets young idiots to vote over and over for them.

@jpbevi: it?s probably weird how much that pro-republican/Ron Paul tweet from @kelly_clarkson is breaking my heart right now. i need to go to bed.

@Jensenclan88: OK, so @kelly_clarkson is voting Ron Paul. I just need Katharine McPhee?s opinion now and I?ll be ready to make my decision.

@JonnyTorres: Congratulations to @kelly_clarkson & @MichelleBranch for having independent thought from brainwashed Hollywood. Move to Nashville!

@HEReinhartFans: Everyone is entitled to their opinion until a musical artist says theirs huh? @kelly_clarkson keep speaking your mind girl!

There were a series of newsletters that went out under Paul?s name from the late 1970s until the mid-1990s, which are littered with racist and homophobic statements. Paul denies writing the newsletters nor knowing who did.

Kelly is certainly entitled to her opinion, but it?s a little naive to endorse a candidate, yet be unaware of the of controversies swirling around them.? Any celebrity who decides to talk politics on social media should expect to be flamed.? In Kelly?s case, her ignorance of the issues around Paul?s candidacy only made it worse.

China plans to fingerprint foreign visitors

Shanghai University, China, students on bicycles

Shanghai University: foreign students in China will have to be fingerprinted if the rules are changed. Photograph: Mike Goldwater/Alamy

Chinese legislators are considering new visa rules that would introduce fingerprinting of foreigners wanting to work or study in China, according to the official China Daily newspaper.

The draft law on entry and exit procedures, for the first time, allows the ministry of public security and the ministry of foreign affairs to put in place a system to gather biological identification data, such as fingerprints, on foreign visitors, the paper said.

Yang Huanming, vice-minister of public security, told a bimonthly session of lawmakers discussing the legal changes that fingerprints and other biometric information were "effective measures" to speed up arrivals and departures at immigration and customs.

The new rules would apply to foreigners seeking residence visas, which cover stays of six months or longer. They would affect business people, foreign journalists and many students. Universities operate two six-month semesters a year so all foreign students, except those on short language courses, would be finger-printed, if the new rules are passed.

China's National People's Congress meets annually in March to approve legislation. Laws are amended during the drafting stage but it is unheard of for the NPC to reject legislation.

The legal changes could aid Chinese workers in foreign companies by deterring foreign bosses from fleeing abroad without paying wages, according to Peking University labour law expert Ye Jingyi. The problem has become commonplace since the global financial crisis, especially in coastal export zones like Guangdong and Shandong, she told China Daily.

"Such a regulation would be a warning to foreign employers that their freedom to leave the country would be restricted if they did not pay workers on time," Ye said, adding: "It's also good news for workers because the rule could help prevent foreign bosses from maliciously delaying wages."

The draft is part of a rethink integrating currently separate rules on identification for foreigners and Chinese citizens that aims to "facilitate exchanges while making sure that those who should not enter are kept out", said Yang.

The US routinely fingerprints foreign visitors as part of the visa application process, part of tighter controls introduced after the 9/11 attacks. Britain has also introduced biometric passports, using facial recognition technology, that reduce waiting time in airports. China Daily pointed to Norway, South Korea and Switzerland as examples of countries that encode fingerprints in passports.

Chinese Yuan and the Japanese Yen.. Direct Trades

The?Chinese currency?closed up against the dollar on today after hitting an all-time high, guided by a stronger mid-point by the?People?s Bank of China, and looks set for an over-4-per cent appreciation for 2011, traders said.? The Yuan is expected to remain stable or rise slightly in the last week of the year to close 2011 near 6.30 versus the dollar, in line with market expectations.

The currency is likely to continue to appreciate next year as China continues to post big trade surpluses despite a slowdown in exports and amid pressure from the United States to let the Yuan rise to balance bilateral trade, traders said.

The Yuan has appreciated 4.27 per cent so far this year, with most of the gain being recorded in the first 10 months of the year as China tries to rebalance trade and use the currency to help fight high inflation.

While the government has recently halted Yuan appreciation amid slowing exports, it also seems to be wary of a weaker Yuan that may lead to capital outflows.

Some overseas investors appear to have been shorting the Yuan in recent months amid signs that China?s growth is slowing under the double weight of a global slowdown and the country?s monetary tightening policy in place since October last year.

In an unexpected announcement ?Japan?and China will promote direct trading of the Yen and Yuan without using dollars and will encourage the development of a market for companies involved in the exchanges, the Japanese government reported today

Japan will purchase Chinese bonds next year, allowing the investment of renminbi that leaves China during the transactions, the Japanese government said encouraging direct yen- Yuan settlement should reduce currency risks and trading costs.

China is Japan?s biggest trading partner with 26.5 trillion yen ($340 billion) in two-way transactions last year, from 9.2 trillion yen a decade earlier. The pacts between the world?s second- and third-largest economies mirror attempts by fund managers to diversify as the two-year-old European debt crisis keeps global financial markets volatile.

Given the huge size of the trade volume between Asia?s two biggest economies, this agreement is much more significant than any other pacts China has signed with other nations.

Couple's wedding rings lost, jeweler replaces them

BRIGHTON, Mass. -- A couple lost their wedding rings and engagement ring on the T.

The husband had lost the rings on the T after having work done on them at DePrisco Jewelers.

?I got off the train, and I knew something was wrong. I just knew something was wrong, so I felt for my left pocket where it was when I was in the station. Nothing. Right pocket, nothing. Pants pockets, nothing. Looked in my bag, knew something was wrong so I literally ran home. As my wife came home I just took off my jacket, I took off my shirt, emptied out my bag, I?m pouring it on the ground,? said John Hart.

They called the jeweler hoping the rings had been located. In the spirit of the holidays, the owner decided to help the couple, and replaced the lost rings.

?I couldn?t believe it. It just - I was astounded by their generosity. It was wonderful. And then, two hours later, I went into labor,? said Erin Hart.

The couple isn?t sure if the husband was pick-pocketed, or he just dropped the envelope that had the rings from his pocket.

The owner of the jewelers said, ?I was pleased to do it in the spirit of Christmas for some deserving people, and it gave me an extra good feeling because they were so appreciative.?

The couple said the new rings are almost exact replicas of the ones that had been lost.

San Francisco Hood Cleaning Pro Says College Town Restaurants Should Prepare Now for the Crowds

PLACENTIA AND RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA - Restaurant owners and operators in college towns need to prepare for the spike in business, says one Placentia and Anaheim hood cleaning business owner.

It's also time for campus dining facilities to have their kitchen hoods inspected, says Massoud Farazandeh, chief executive officer of American Professional Services (APS-Hoods), who also is a hood sales expert.

"We tell restaurant owners to call professionals to clean their kitchen systems before the onslaught of business," says Farazandeh. "More students means increased cooking volume, which could cause problems if grease buildup already exists in the system."

Built up grease could act as fuel if a fire broke out, he says. Follow these tips to find a quality range hood cleaning company:
? Ask what inspection/cleaning standards the company follows.
? Ask for details on what cleaning services are included.
? Ask for proof of licenses, insurance and certifications.
? Ask for a report after the cleaning or inspection that shows what was done and points out deficiencies/repairs to make.
? Ask for references.

Once a qualified company is selected, the company should recommend a routine cleaning schedule.
Most companies recommend schedules according to the type and volume of food cooked. Some guidelines include:
? Restaurants that cook with smokehouses or wood fires- clean systems monthly.
? Restaurants that use charbroilers, fryers or cook with large volumes of vegetable oils- clean systems quarterly at a minimum.
? No restaurant should go longer than six months between cleanings.

Melanie Amaro Expresses Shock, Appreciation Over X Factor Victory

Melanie Amaro accomplished the very difficult on the first season of The X Factor: the front-runner since day one, this talented singer maintained that status for months and went on to win the title last night.

And she still can't believe it.

"I felt as though I was hearing things, to be honest," Amaro told reporters today of when Steve Jones announced her at the winner. "I had to check my ear real quick. It shocked me a lot. It really did."

Melanie Amaro Wins!

Melanie, of course, is now $5 million richer, a wild sum for anyone, let alone a young woman who didn't grow up with much.

"Life will change a lot," she says. "The most I have ever had before was $200, if I was lucky."

A piano teacher from Florida, Amaro says she'll purchase a new home for her mother with the winnings, along with a lifetime supply of chicken for herself. Seriously. ("I can't live without it. It's my favorite food.")

Overall, she just wants to give a shout-out to her fans.

"Thank you to all my supporters who've supported me and have been behind me since day one and believed in me when I didn't even have the heart to believe in myself," she says. "Even when I went home, you guys still pushed and sent all your love my way."

You're welcome, Melanie! Did do you think Amaro deserved to win?

Russia's Medvedev tries to appease protesters (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? President Dmitry Medvedev called on Thursday for sweeping reform of Russia's political system to try to appease protesters staging the biggest demonstrations since Vladimir Putin rose to power 12 years ago.

In his last state of the nation address to parliament as president, Medvedev outlined plans that would ease the Kremlin's tight grip on power, including restoring the election of regional governors and allowing half the seats in the State Duma lower house of parliament to be directly elected in the regions.

His opponents, preparing for new protests across Russia on Saturday, dismissed his offer as the empty promises of a lame-duck president who is stepping aside for Putin to return to the main seat of power next year after four years as premier.

"Today, at a new stage in the development of our state, supporting the initiative proposed by our prime minister, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, I propose a comprehensive reform of our political system," Medvedev, 46, told rows of deputies in an hour-long speech which was greeted by occasional applause.

"I want to say that I hear those who talk about the need for change, and understand them. We need to give all active citizens the legal chance to participate in political life."

The moves were intended to address calls for change by tens of thousands of protesters who have taken to the streets since a December 4 election which they say was rigged, but Medvedev and Putin have ignored their main demand - to rerun the poll.

A Kremlin aide said the proposals would be sent to parliament in the next few days. They signaled that Russia's leaders now realize that the mood has changed in the country and something has to be done to satisfy the protesters.

But the opposition dismissed the moves as more empty words by a man who had failed to carry out his promises since he was ushered into the presidency by Putin in 2008 because the constitution barred his mentor from a third successive term.

"It's an answer to the protests, but it's not enough. It's half-hearted," said Vladimir Ryzhkov, who took part in a big rally on December 10 at Moscow's Bolotnaya Square and is helping plan another rally on Saturday at the capital's Sakharov Avenue.

"The main demand at Bolotnaya was to scrap the election results and call for new elections to be conducted according to new rules. Instead, he is trying to preserve the illegitimate Duma. This will not be accepted by society and will not be accepted by those on Sakharov Avenue."

NEW KREMLIN CHIEF OF STAFF

Shortly after Medvedev delivered his speech, the Kremlin announced the appointment of Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov as chief of the presidential staff, handing one of Russia's most powerful jobs to a long-time Putin ally.

The decision could signal that Putin sees no long-term place in his team for acting Kremlin chief of staff Vladislav Surkov, often seen as the grey cardinal of Russian politics. But it is unlikely to point to a major change in Putin's thinking.

"Putin's team will allow no reform, because now they want him to get 60 percent (in the March presidential election), which is impossible to achieve using fair mechanisms," Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov said.

Putin said last week that he was ready to consider allowing the election of regional governors, provided their candidacy was approved by the Kremlin. The former KGB spy had abolished the direct election of governors in 2004 to tighten his control of Russia's often independent-minded regions.

In his speech in a gilded Kremlin hall to members of the Duma and the Federation Council upper chamber, Medvedev said there should be a simpler process for registering parties - allowing more parties to take part.

He suggested reducing the number of signatures required to run for president, said officials should declare their major expenses to address public concerns of corruption and called for the creation of an independent "public" television channel.

Putin has closely controlled state television and Russian media have been criticized for all but ignoring the mass protests against his rule.

But the protesters, many of them young professionals who have answered calls to rallies on social network sites, say Medvedev and Putin, 59, are out of touch and must not get away with tinkering with a political system they see as undemocratic.

"All this was necessary to legitimize the results of the December 4 election and the coming presidential election ... It is an intentional lie and it is misguiding," said independent political analyst Stanislav Belkovsky.

Comparing the proposals to the "perestroika" reforms that failed to save the Soviet Union, he said "you cannot get toothpaste back in the tube ... The system is decomposing.

"They are frantically trying to find ways to preserve it, but these chaotic measures just bring it closer to the end."

Woman charged with sending money to Pakistan group

A woman was indicted Wednesday on charges she sent money to Pakistan to help fund terrorist attacks against U.S. military personnel, authorities said.

Oytun Ayse Mihalik, 39, faces three counts of providing material support to terrorists and one count of making a false statement. If convicted of all counts, Mihalik could face up to 53 years in prison.

Mihalik funneled about $2,000 to a person in Pakistan over a three-week period beginning late last year, knowing the money would be used to prepare for and carry out attacks against the U.S. military and others overseas, federal prosecutors said.

An email message left with her attorney, Alan Eisner, was not immediately returned.

Mihalik, who worked as a pharmacist, has been in federal custody since she was arrested in August after she attempted to board a flight to Turkey, her native country.

She previously pleaded not guilty to the false statement charge.

Mihalik lied to federal agents during an interview at Los Angeles International Airport following a six-month trip to Turkey by telling them she never used an alias to wire money overseas and she had only sent funds once, authorities said.

She told investigators the money was meant for a family friend who was having financial problems, according to an affidavit.

Authorities wouldn't elaborate on why they believe the money Mihalik wired overseas was going to be used for terrorist attacks.

However, court documents reveal Mihalik's arrest is "related to national security investigations in other areas of the United States." As of August, Mihalik had been cooperating with investigators, records show.

"The charges are based on the defendant's intent to cause harm to U.S. military personnel," said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles. "We have not alleged any attacks that may have resulted from the funding because the legal issue is the defendant's intent as to what the money would be used for."

A trial on the false statement charge was set for February. Mihalik will be arraigned on the new charges at a later date.
