GamePop Mini: A 'Free' Android Game Console + Subscription

Silicon Valley-based mobile software company BlueStacks has been getting quite some attention (including from us) for its yet-to-be launched GamePop console + monthly subscription that will supposedly enable people to play a host of popular Android and iOS games on their TVs.

Today, the company is presenting a new offering, dubbed the GamePop Mini, which will essentially be a smaller, nimbler version of the console that will be gratis (compared to $129 for the regular GamePop console).

GamePop Mini is thus essentially free hardware, but it will come with a subscription for games priced $6.99 per month.

It?s impossible to report this news without pointing out that the Wall Street Journal yesterday revealed that Google is working on an Android gaming console of its own. If that report checks out and said console makes it to market, it will remain to be seen whether fledgling rivals like BlueStacks or OUYA stand a chance. What do you think?

(Story continues after this quick poll)

Like its big brother, the new, leaner GamePop device (see render in featured image above) will run Jelly Bean 4.2, connect to a TV via a supplied HDMI cable and include a curated group of 500 mobile game partners, including HalfBrick (Fruit Ninja, Jetpack Joyride), Glu (Blood Brothers) and kids app developer Intellijoy.

As for the differences: we understand that GamePop proper will have a ?nicer form factor, fit and finish?, boast a faster chipset, more peripherals and be ?more expandable?. If that will be enough to warrant a $129 price difference remains to be seen.

The GamePop Mini can be ?purchased? from Monday via the product website. The regular GamePop can also be ordered for free (as a launch promotion) through Sunday night.

BlueStacks CEO, Rosen Sharma, comments:

We have always planned on having a free console option. The biggest value of the GamePop service is its content ? not the box.

Hardware costs have come down so fast that we?re able to undercut the rest of the market.

With the free promotion we?ve been doing in June we?re already seeing a ton of adoption. That volume then attracts more developers and therefore more and better content. It?s building momentum.

The company is not disclosing how many pre-orders of the GamePop console it has seen to date, only saying that ?they are stronger than expected?. Both GamePop consoles are slated to ship this winter.

Up until now, BlueStacks was best known for its App Player software, which now caters to 10 million users who want to play their favorite mobile games on a Mac or PC desktop computer.

BlueStacks is backed by the likes of Andreessen Horowitz, Qualcomm Ventures, Citrix Systems and Intel Capital. BlueStacks also raised funding from Austin-based AMD, makers of the new chips for the Xbox One and PS4 consoles and one of its strategic partners.

Gut Microbes Spur Liver Cancer in Obese Mice

Clostridium difficile

The link between cancer and obesity may be related to changes in gut fauna, at least in obese mice with liver cancer. Pictured: Clostridium difficile Image: Flickr/AJ Cann

The gut bacteria of obese mice unleash high levels of an acid that promotes liver cancer, reveals one of the first studies to uncover a mechanism for the link between obesity and cancer. The research is published today in Nature.

?Obesity in general has many different types of cancer associated with it,? says Eiji Hara, a cancer biologist at the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research in Tokyo and one of the study authors. But in the case of liver cancer, he says, ?I never expected the microbiome was linked.?

Hara and his colleagues initially set out to study how dying cells influence obesity-linked cancers. Cells that are irreparably damaged or pre-cancerous can become senescent ? meaning that they stop dividing for overall health of the organism. But before senescent cells die, they can spew out chemicals that may cause inflammation and promote cancer development.

To examine whether senescent cells are involved in obesity-induced cancers, Hara and his colleagues worked with genetically engineered mice whose cells emit light upon becoming senescent. They then primed the mice by exposing them to a carcinogenic chemical, a process that Hara says may be similar to humans? exposure to environmental toxins, such as air pollution. Researchers then fed the mice either a normal diet or a high-fat diet.

After 30 weeks, only 5% of the lean mice developed cancer ? in their lungs ? whereas all the obese mice developed liver cancer.

Although the results showed that cell senescence was involved in obesity-linked cancer in the mice, Hara and his colleagues did not initially understand why the liver became a hotbed for tumors. But when they compared the blood serum of the two groups of mice, they found that the obese mice had much higher amounts of deoxycholic acid (DCA), a chemical that causes DNA damage and can induce cell senescence.

Deliver to the liver
DCA is a by-product of metabolism in intestinal bacteria. In the gut, certain types of microbes convert bile acids ? which aid in fat digestion ? to the more harmful DCA, which is then absorbed into the bloodstream and delivered to the liver.

The researchers found that obese mice had a greater number of DCA-producing Clostridium bacteria, and that obese mice given antibiotics to clear intestinal bacteria developed fewer liver tumors.

Peter Turnbaugh, a systems biologist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, says that the data provide a clear example of how the metabolism of gut microbes links obesity and cancer. ?They?ve uncovered a nice story,? he says.

(AP) ? The father of NSA leaker Edward Snowden acknowledged Friday that his son broke the law but doesn't think he committed treason.

"If folks want to classify him as a traitor, in fact, he has betrayed his government. But I don't believe that he's betrayed the people of the United States," Lonnie Snowden told NBC's "Today" show.

Snowden said his attorney has informed Attorney General Eric Holder that he believes his son would voluntarily return to the United States if the Justice Department promises not to hold him before trial and not subject him to a gag order, NBC reported.

The elder Snowden hasn't spoken to his son since April, but he said he believes he's being manipulated by people at WikiLeaks. The anti-secrecy group has been trying to help Edward Snowden gain asylum.

"I don't want to put him in peril, but I am concerned about those who surround him," Lonnie Snowden told NBC. "I think WikiLeaks, if you've looked at past history, you know, their focus isn't necessarily the Constitution of the United States. It's simply to release as much information as possible."

Lonnie Snowden declined to comment when reached Friday by The Associated Press.

Edward Snowden, who fled to Russia, is charged with violating U.S. espionage laws for leaking information about National Security Agency surveillance programs.

Google Play Movies gets a new look, drives another nail in Nexus Q's coffin

Google Play Movies

Google Movies & TV today got visual refresh that also takes away another third of the functionality of the already defunct Nexus Q.

First, the important stuff: The app got a new layout and design that brings it more in line with Google's other apps, borrowing from the likes of Gmail and Google Play. The new navigation drawer is your portal to "Watch Now," which tries to predict what you'll want to see next, along with "My Movies," "My TV Shows" and "Shop," which takes you to Google Play. There's a shortcut in the overflow menu that'll take you to videos that you've shot with your phone or tablet, which is nice.

And now, the slightly disappointing part.

Government plans to boost roads, rail in infrastructure plan

By William James

LONDON (Reuters) - The government promised on Thursday to upgrade roads and carry out what it said was the biggest rail investment in more than 100 years as part of its strategy to get the economy growing again while also keeping a tight lid on spending.

A day after Chancellor George Osborne announced cuts to government budgets worth 11.5 billion pounds in the 2015/16 fiscal year, his deputy Danny Alexander detailed the Conservative-led coalition's infrastructure plans.

Alexander described them as "the most comprehensive, ambitious and long-lasting capital investment plans this country has ever known."

Alexander announced 28 billion pounds would be spent by the government on improving roads from 2014 to 2020 and it would support 30 billion pounds in rail investments.

He also announced a multi-billion pound guarantee designed to help build a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point and details of energy prices that the government will guarantee for offshore wind power developers.

The overall plan, worth a total of 100 billion pounds, put some flesh on the bones of 300 billion pounds in capital spending commitments set out until 2020.

The announcement did not amount to a new injection of cash as the government battles to eliminate a large budget deficit.

The Conservative party is seeking to set out its stall for the 2015 general election which is likely to be won or lost on how well the economy is performing. Thursday's announcement aimed to draw in private sector cash by instilling confidence in the government's commitment to infrastructure.

The opposition Labour party, which has previously urged more short-term spending to revive the economy but has been wary about committing itself to increased borrowing, kept up its criticism of the government for doing too little on investment.

"When is the government going to pull its finger out and actually start to build some of these things?" said Chris Leslie, a Labour lawmaker and a party spokesman for economic issues.

OWN to air 'All My Children,' 'One Life to Live'

(AP) ? "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" are returning to TV.

Oprah Winfrey's OWN network says it's acquired the first 40 episodes of the daytime dramas' revival on The Online Network. They'll air Monday through Thursday for a 10-week period beginning July 15.

In a statement Wednesday, OWN President Erik Logan said: "These shows have proven to be very popular with a significant, loyal fan base."

When the two soaps were canceled by ABC in 2011, fans begged Winfrey to give them a second life on OWN.

She responded by releasing a video message on her website saying she couldn't save the shows because "there just are not enough people who are home in the daytime to watch them."

Really, Chris Brown? Now He's Accused of Hit-and-Run

Does Chris Brown like jail? Because he sure seems determined to get sent there. The singer, who has been on probation since pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna in 2009, has once again been accused of skirting the law. This time, he's being charged with hit-and-run and driving without a valid license. If a judge rules that he violated probation, Brown could end up in prison for four years. Which, in California-celebrity time, is probably around 32 minutes. But still! Jail!

Easy Outdoor Entertaining Tips with Jack's? Pizza | The Motherload

?

Jack's Pizza

If there is one thing that you know about me, it is that you know how much our family loves to grill and how much we love our pizza. That is why I am excited to share with you that I will be teaming up with Jack?s? Pizza this summer on the ?JACK?S Summer Grilling? program to share just how easy it is to grill their pizza.? Yes, they?re compensating me for this, but I?m a genuine fan!

As a mom, I am always looking for easy meals to entertain with in the summer months and that is why I am excited to share with you how easy it is to grill and entertain this summer with minimal effort, minimal cost and minimal time. If your family is anything like ours, I know these are three requirements for mealtime and JACK?S has you covered.

With a smaller home, the great outdoors allows us to offer a comfortable place for our guests to spread out and enjoy themselves, while basking in the beauty of the outdoors. ?Backyard barbecues can be made practically effortless with a little bit of planning and preparation. I wanted to showcase some easy ideas for achieving a successful and fun backyard bash that will long be remembered.

Jack's Pizza

Create a Fashionable Spread

Outdoor entertaining can be very fun and chic with a few fun and inexpensive pieces in your arsenal. Use simple, clean and unused terra cotta pots for displaying your pretzels and chips, fill a clean wheelbarrow with ice to display the drinks, use jars for serving old-fashioned lemonade, and fan finger foods out on wooden cutting boards for a fun display. ?I also love to visit the summer display section of a local store for inexpensive and fun outdoor dishes to add a splash of color to your outdoor entertaining.

Offer Ample Seating

If you have a large gathering coming, don?t be afraid to bring your indoor seating outside to add extra chairs to the mix. Create gatherings of seating areas outdoors using your lawn chairs and, if you are short on seats, ask guests to bring their own chairs so everyone is comfortable. Folding tables and chairs can provide additional seating and quilts or blankets can provide fun seating for the younger children.

Jack's Pizza

Bring on the Games

The key to a fun outdoor party are a couple of great outdoor games to keep the guests entertained. Our family loves to play badminton and a few rounds of bean bag toss for a little outdoor fun and to get fun conversations flowing. These are fun investment pieces to make for outdoor entertaining and will provide additional entertainment even in those fall months for tailgating season. Inexpensive sprinkler toys, a sand box, coloring books, crayons, sidewalk chalk and bubbles are fun items to have on hand for the smaller guests at the party.

For a creative idea for keeping the children entertained, create a game of Ring Toss from simple items from your recycle bin.? Fill empty, plastic two-liter soda bottles with colored sand and fasten the tops on tightly. Obtain a package of plastic rings (in the outdoor section of your superstore) for the children to toss on the bottles. Have the kids stand behind a tape line to throw the rings. If they get three rings around the bottle, they win the game.

Take the Night Off

Looking for an easy meal that is perfect for entertaining? Did you know that you can grill a JACK?S Original Pizza??It couldn?t be easier to-prepare a pizza on the gas grill and with some simple additions of a salad and fresh fruit, you have a meal that offers effortless entertaining. My favorite part? The clean-up just couldn?t be easier!

For more information about how to enjoy JACK?S Original pizza on the gas grill and for your chance to win great grilling prizes, visit?www.JacksGrilling.com. JACK?S pizza is available nationwide at your local grocery, drug and convenience stores. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.? Open to legal residents of the 50 U.S. and D.C., 18 and over. Ends: 7/29/13. The Chicago Blackhawks headed for the East Coast, one win between them and the Stanley Cup title. The Boston Bruins, meanwhile, went home knowing they had to win the next game to avoid elimination, not to mention the bitter experience of watching someone else celebrate winning the Stanley Cup on their ice.

Sound familiar? It should.

Not only were those the scenarios for the Blackhawks and Bruins as they made their way to Boston for Game 6 on Monday night, they were the exact situations each team faced the last time they were in the Stanley Cup finals.

Chicago won Game 6 in Philadelphia in 2010 to give the Blackhawks their first Stanley Cup title since 1961. The Bruins won Game 6 at home in 2011, then beat the Canucks in Vancouver for their first Stanley Cup championship in 39 years.

"We could all take some experience from that and realize that, to win this game, we've got to make sure we leave everything on the ice," Boston forward Brad Marchand said, referring to the Bruins though his words could have applied to the Blackhawks, as well.

"We want to win the cup, and to do that, you've got to push to the last second of the last game," Marchand added. "We've learned that the hard way."

In 2011, the Bruins lost the first two games of their finals series with Vancouver. They evened it up with wins on their own ice, only to put themselves on the brink of elimination with a loss in Game 5.

The Bruins came out roaring in Game 6, scoring four goals in the first period on their way to a 5-2 win that forced a winner-take-all finale. Two days later, it was more of the same as Boston routed the Canucks 4-0 for the Stanley Cup title.

"You always have life until it's over," said Boston goalkeeper Tuukka Rask, who was Tim Thomas' backup in 2011. "This is a new season. Obviously, we know what we did in the past, but it's not going to help us (Monday) on the ice. We still have to go out there and make it happen."

But this current group has shown some resilience, too.

In the first round of the playoffs, the Bruins were down 4-1 to Toronto with 11 minutes left in Game 7. Nathan Horton, Milan Lucic and Patrice Bergeron scored to give Boston new life, then Bergeron scored in overtime to send the Bruins into the next round.

Not that Boston coach Claude Julien planned to remind his players of any of this.

"I don't need to go in there and give this big speech and get these guys riled up because they know what's at stake," Julien said. "We've proven it in the past, and now we have an opportunity to prove it again. That's up to us to show it on the ice versus talking a great game in the dressing room and not showing up on the ice."

The Blackhawks didn't see much point in reminiscing, either.

In 2010, they took a 3-2 lead to Philadelphia after beating up on the Flyers 7-4 in Game 5. They were four minutes from winning the cup in regulation when Philadelphia tied the game, but Patrick Kane won it in overtime. After the puck crossed the goal line, it got stuck beneath the padding in the net and no one could see it. It took a video review to uphold the goal ? though Kane and Patrick Sharp didn't wait to start celebrating in front of the Philadelphia fans.

"It's a similar feeling, especially having the series tied 2-2, taking Game 5 at home and coming on the road for Game 6," Sharp said. "You've got to be careful. You've seen a couple years ago Boston was down 3-2, they won at home and then won Game 7 in Vancouver. We know this team is capable of coming back.

"For us, I know it's a big game," he added. "But you want to play it like it's any other game, play the way we have all season and try to pull one out here on the road."

While both the Bruins and Blackhawks acknowledge the rarity of facing identical Game 6 scenarios as they did just a few years ago, not everything is exactly the same.

The goalie for each team is different, with Rask and Corey Crawford both newcomers to playing in the finals. (Thomas may or may not be retired while Chicago's goalie in 2010, Antti Niemi, was a Vezina Trophy finalist this season with San Jose.) Salary cap concerns forced the Blackhawks to overhaul their roster after they won the Stanley Cup ? though Kane, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa still make up Chicago's core ? and Mark Recchi, one of Boston's biggest stars in 2011, is enjoying retirement.

And if this series has taught anyone anything, it's that nothing works out quite like it's expected.

"You don't want to get ahead of yourself in the process," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "We've got some guys that have been there, they know the experience. ... There's some guys that they're so excited, you dream about this moment. We've got to keep everything in perspective. We want to make sure that we're confident playing the game and putting yourself in the now position as opposed to ahead of yourself."

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic (Now With Apps!)

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic (Now With Apps!)

Greasy fingers are the bane of touchscreens, obscuring the display behind snail trails of oil and streaks of grime. Forget that mess. Leap Motion has promised hands-free PC navigation for months now, and after some hands-on time we can confirm that the future is here, and it's amazing.

As a brief refresher, the Leap Motion Controller tracks your hand and finger movements in three-dimensional space, allowing users to recreate multitouch input without actually touching anything. You just wave your hands and wiggle your fingers in the air over it and boom, your computer responds.

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic (Now With Apps!)

It will be available for Windows 7 and 8, as well as Mac OS X 10.6 and above, when the $80 device hits store shelves on July 29th (though if you pre-ordered, it's out on the 22nd). It won't be available for mobile to start but the company is looking into potentially integrating the technology with a number of OEMs.

With a few waves of your hands, both native applications?from web browsers to Google Earth?and system navigations respond instantly to your commands. The company is also developing Airspace, an online hub for LeapMotion-enabled applications.

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic (Now With Apps!)

"Everything you can do with a touch-based system, like Windows 8, can now be accomplished with LeapMotion technology. We want our users to have a magical experience, with easy and natural movements in the air leading to amazing interactions. This is the foundation for our approach to existing systems," David Holz, co-founder and CTO of LeapMotion, said in a press statement. "But this is only the beginning. The potential for our 3D interaction technology is really unleashed by applications built specifically for LeapMotion, helping drive the future of computing."

Leap Motion Controller Hands-On: The Future Is Magic (Now With Apps!)

I had the opportunity to try out the Leap Motion last week, and great googly moogly this thing is amazeballs. It tracks both hands?their position, angle, rotation, orientation, everything?in real time, as well as the positions and movements of all three joints in all ten fingers. The controller registers everything within a roughly foot-tall, 18-inch-wide dome-shaped area surrounding the controller and is wildly accurate, picking up even miniscule finger twitches. During the demo, used Google Earth to fly around Lower Manhattan like I was the kid from Flight of the Navigator, I played a 3D variation of Brick Breaker using my index fingers as paddles to punch, poke, and prod the ball around the arena, and I navigated around both OS X and Windows 8 systems by swiping my hands through the air.

It was strange, initially, getting used to moving the cursor without grabbing a mouse or tapping the screen but it only takes a second to get the hang of the process. The controller can also be set to use either basic controls (taps, swipes, and other common input commands) or more advanced gestures, which helps ease you into it as well.

Granted, I played with this device for all of 15 minutes in a controlled environment (LeapMotion's SF office) but that was a glorious quarter hour; I felt like Tony Stark using the Jarvis UI. July 29th can't come soon enough.

Vertu's Perry Oosting steps down as CEO, replaced by CMO Max Pogliani

According to a statement we received earlier, Vertu's Perry Oosting (pictured left) has stepped down after his successful four year stint as President and CEO, though he'll continue to invest in the company. Despite the relatively short run, the Dutch exec oversaw Vertu's departure from Nokia and subsequently launched the company's first-ever Android device, the Ti. Little is known about the reasons behind this change, but judging by Oosting's considerable knowledge of the luxury goods market, he'll have plenty of options for his next move.

The luxury phone maker will now be led by CMO Massimiliano "Max" Pogliani (pictured right), who's probably best known for building up Nespresso, Nestlé's premium coffee brand, prior to joining Vertu last November. Pogliani will be assisted by ex-Jimmy Choo COO Jonathan Sinclair, who joined Vertu this month under the same title. Press release after the break.
