3D Feh MIT has already moved on to 4D printing video

The bad news: just as much of the world is starting to get excited about the prospects of 3D printing, science is moving on to the world of 4D. The good news: in the future, you might not have to assemble that Ikea chair yourself. "4D printing" is the term cientists are using to refer to a technology that MIT's Skylar Tibbits talked up during a recent TED appearance. The fourth "d" here is time, referring to an object that, once printed, is capable of changing shape (over time, naturally).

"Essentially the printing is nothing new," Tibbits told the BBC. "It is about what happens after." So far the concept has been demonstrated with thin strands of plastic, which, once added to water, form into a predetermined shape, using energy from the absorption. Suggested future applications involve furniture, pipes, bikes and buildings. First, however, scientists will have to demonstrate the technology on a larger structure, of course, and they'll explore the possibility of other energy sources, like heat, sound and vibration.

Green Blog: An Emblem for Puerto Rico?s Climate Fight

More on amphibians as a bellwether:

Advocates for action on climate change in Puerto Rico have a mascot: the coqu?, a tiny tree frog.

Named for its high-pitched calls, a familiar evening serenade, the coqu? is the generic name for some 14 species of frog, some only half an inch long, that long inhabited the island archipelago.? Three of the species have gone extinct since the 1970s because of a warming climate and habitat loss in the densely populated territory; scientists fear that the remaining 14 will also disappear unless the authorities take quick action to preserve more land and to slow rising temperatures.

Yet, as Rachel Nuwer reported here on Wednesday, the principal threat to frogs like the coqu?s is the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, an organism that causes fatal skin infections in the frogs and that becomes more prevalent as temperatures rise.

?Climate change is making things better for the fungus and worse for amphibians,? said Rafael Joglar, a professor of biology at the University of Puerto Rico and an expert on coquis and other amphibians. ?The fungus infects the skin of the frogs and will eventually kill them.?

Loss of the coqu?s would be unsettling for Puerto Rico, where the frogs? image can be found on everything from T-shirts to key rings to rock engravings. Because the frogs feed on mosquitoes, the decline of the tiny amphibians will mean that humans will be more exposed to mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue fever, Dr. Joglar said.

On Thursday, scientists led by El Puente, a community action group in Brooklyn, will issue a report calling on the federal government and the governor of Puerto Rico to combat climate change and to quadruple the amount of land shielded from development on the island to around 32 percent.

In a statement accompanying the report, Archbishop Roberto Gonz?lez Nieves of the Archdiocese of San Juan echoes the plea for action on global warming and fossil fuel emissions. ?Congress must limit greenhouse emissions before climate change forever silences the evening symphony of the coqu?,? he writes.

More broadly, global action would help to slow the rise in sea levels. Along Puerto Rico?s coastlines, tides are expected to continue rising 1.4 millimeters a year, which is contributing to coastal retreat of as much as one meter a year, according to the report, which is being issued in tandem with a meeting in San Juan of Latino leaders addressing climate change.

Other species like sea turtles, shorebirds, and coral reefs are also threatened by rising temperatures, higher seas, and more frequent and severe storms, the study observes.

The report notes that in 2010 and 2011, the island experienced about 100 days when temperatures rose to 90 degrees Fahrenheit or more, equaling the number of 90-degree days recorded for the entire half-century between 1900 and 1949. Puerto Rico?s overall temperature has risen by about one degree in the last 30 years, and while that may not sound like much, ?it?s causing real problems for the frogs, Dr. Joglar said. ?It?s critical for the coqu?.?

Beyond more aggressive national action to reduce national dependence on fossil fuels and to preserve habitat; the report calls for creating a network of ecological corridors that would connect Puerto Rico?s current patchwork of isolated reserves and steps to eradicate invasive species, including the frog-killing fungus and some nonnative frogs and toads.

Without concerted action, Dr. Joglar warns, the island could lose a class of creatures that are viewed as barometers of environmental health. ?Amphibians in general are bio-indicators,? he said. ?What we are really worried about is what?s going to happen next.?

Natural remedies for arthritis | MNN - Mother Nature Network

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States, limiting the activities of nearly 21 million adults, according to the CDC. Those with arthritis, though, don?t have to be slaves to their genetics or gym injuries; there are several natural arthritis remedies to help heal joint pain and inflammation.

?

What is arthritis and what causes it?
The two most common forms of arthritis are rheumatoid (RA) and osteoarthritis. The latter is often associated with the wearing down and tearing of the cartilage, or simply not having enough cartilage after a while in a particular joint.

?

RA is an autoimmune disease, in which the body attacks itself. In addition, ?-myalgia? diseases like fibro- and poly-, could be considered varieties of arthritis because they both share similar painful symptoms in joints and muscles.

?

All forms of arthritis have one major root cause in common: inflammation.

?

One major cause of inflammation: Poor diet
From a natural, holistic perspective, the foods we eat play a significant role in inflammatory responses. David Getoff, vice president of the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation and a certified clinical nutritionist, believes that frequent consumption of common food allergens ? like wheat or soy, as well as anything loaded with sugar, or anything that quickly converts into sugar (alcohol, most grains) ? can promote inflammation, which wreaks havoc on the body?s joints.

?

?We are living organisms that contain a masterful, self-healing ability,? says Getoff. ?If we feed our bodies? the right foods and additional nutrients, our bodies can begin to heal on their own, perhaps without having to take potentially-harmful drugs.?

?

Getoff advises eating healthy ? meaning free of allergy-promoting foods ? for at least two months. According to him, it takes six weeks for wheat to clear out of the system. Perhaps due to its modern, stripped-of-nutrition, hybridized ubiquity, wheat may trigger an auto-immune reaction in many people. Make sure to cut out foods that may seem more innocuous than regular table sugar but that also may promote inflammation, like fruit, honey, molasses and agave.

?

Supplements for arthritis
A good brand of glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate, at the right dose, may help some arthritis sufferers. The same goes for hyaluronic acid, which is used in beauty treatments much for the same reason it may help some with arthritis, due to its hydrating properties. The fatty acid, Cetyl myristoleate, also seems to be an effective joint lubricant and anti-inflammatory. It was isolated in Swiss albino mice, which for some Darwinian wonder, never develop arthritis.

?

Best forms of exercise for arthritis
The bodybuilding mantra, ?No pain, no gain,? may have had cache in hardcore gyms back in the 1980s but these days, if you have arthritis, you want to choose exercises that cause your joints no pain whatsoever. Perhaps the best way for arthritis sufferers to gain strength and cardiovascular endurance with very low risk of further joint wear and tear is aquatic exercise.

?

Whether it?s a gentle water aerobics class or Olympic-style sprints, swimming can also help burn excess body fat. Pool jogging in waist-high water is also a simple yet highly effective way to burn calories without placing a heavy burden on the joints.

?

Gentle stretching or yoga is also advised for those with arthritis to help get back some range of motion.

?

If you prefer cycling, rock climbing, but those activities (or any other) exacerbate your condition, reduce the frequency of the activity.?

?

Ice or heat?
Both ice and heat have their merits when treating arthritis. Like treating an injury, ice seems to be more effective for reducing inflammation and swelling and numbing pain, especially when symptoms appear in the first 24-48 hours. Heat, on the other hand, tends to work best for relaxing muscles and stiff joints by increasing blood flow and flexibility.

?

Reduce exposure to pollutants and help purge your body of poisons
Even if you eat a wholesome diet loaded with antioxidants, if you are exposed to high levels of environmental pollutants such as mercury, lead, aluminum and inorganic plastic compounds, you may still develop arthritis. Various lab tests can analyze the amount of chemicals in your body. Your cookware can also be a common source of poisons entering your body. High blood levels of a man-made chemical (Teflon) used in non-stick coatings are associated with a raised risk of arthritis.

?

You need lots of friendly bugs in your gut

The billions and billions of bacteria in our guts are like an army, defending our immune system from constant bombardment. If you?ve taken several doses of antibiotics over the years and haven?t eaten healthy, take a probiotic that contains several billion micro-organisms per capsule to repopulate the gut with good bacteria. Perhaps you?ll keep autoimmune diseases such as RA at bay.
? What other natural arthritis remedies can I try?
Holistic options such as acupuncture, chiropractic medicine and rehabilitative therapy may help alleviate joint or muscle pain, even in pets.

?

Do you have arthritis? Care to suggest any other natural remedies below?

Android 101: Adding your own custom sounds to Android events

Android Central

The first thing most people do when getting a new phone is change the ringtone. Depending on which Android device you own, your options for different alarms, notifications, and ringtones will vary. Perhaps you aren’t happy with the sounds that came preinstalled on your phone, or you’ve been using the stock sounds and are ready for a change. You’ve got some ringtones on your computer, and want to use them on your phone. How do you get the files from your computer, to your phone? Do you have to put them in any specific place for them to be selectable in the Android menu, and will they be listed in the same place as the sounds that came with your phone? Does it matter what kind of sound files you use? You can find the answers to these questions, and more, after the break.

How Million-Dollar Frauds Turned Photo Conservation Into a Mature Science

It's a bit reductionist to say that it's just because they're 'snobs'....the way it was explained to me by my art teacher is thus:

There are artists, and there are artisans...artists create art, artisans create craft...the yardstick used [in the art world] to differentiate the two is the ability to reproduce the work given the same skills, equipment and environment.

Take for example, two metal workers...both with the same training, equipment, environment and requirements...likely it will be difficult to spot

FILE - In this Feb. 13, 2013 file photo, outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta speaks during his last news conference as defense secretary. at the Pentagon. The U.S.-led military coalition in Afghanistan incorrectly reported a decline in Taliban attacks last year, and officials said Tuesday that there was actually no change in the number of attacks on international troops from 2011 to 2012. In mid-December, Panetta said "violence is down," in 2012, and that Afghan forces "have gotten much better at providing security" in areas where they have taken the lead role. He said the Taliban can be expected to continue to attack, "but overall they are losing." (AP Photo/Susan Walsh, File)

(AP) ? The American-led military coalition in Afghanistan backed off Tuesday from its claim that Taliban attacks dropped off in 2012, tacitly acknowledging a hole in its widely repeated argument that violence is easing and that the insurgency is in steep decline.

In response to Associated Press inquiries about its latest series of statistics on security in Afghanistan, the coalition command in Kabul said it had erred in reporting a 7 percent decline in attacks. In fact there was no decline at all, officials said.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who is among the senior officials who had publicly repeated the assertion of an encouraging drop-off in Taliban attacks last year, was disturbed to learn of the error, said his spokesman, George Little.

"This particular set of metrics doesn't tell the full story of progress against the Taliban, of course, but it's unhelpful to have inaccurate information in our systems," Little said.

A coalition spokesman, Jamie Graybeal, attributed the miscounting to clerical errors and said the problem does not change officials' basic assessment of the war, which they say is on a positive track as American and allied forces withdraw.

The 7 percent figure had been included in a report posted on the website of the coalition, the International Security Assistance Force, on Jan. 22 as part of its monthly update on trends in security and violence. It was removed from the website recently without explanation. After the AP asked last week about the missing report, coalition officials said they were correcting the data and would re-publish the report. As of Tuesday afternoon it had not reappeared.

It was not clear whether or how the Pentagon might correct a separate report ? its semi-annual report to Congress on security progress in Afghanistan, which used some of the same Taliban-attack statistics. The report was sent to Congress in December.

"We'll look at any adjustments that need to be made" to that report, Little said.

U.S. and allied officials have often cited declining violence as a sign that the Taliban have been degraded and that Afghan forces are in position to take the lead security role across the country when the last U.S. combat troops leave Dec. 31, 2014.

In mid-December, Panetta said "violence is down" for 2012 and Afghan forces "have gotten much better at providing security" in areas where they have taken the lead. He said the Taliban could be expected to continue to attack, "but overall they are losing."

Little said Panetta was briefed only "very recently" on the erroneous data.

U.S. and alliance officials try to measure progress against the Taliban from a variety of angles. Those include, for example, indications that the Taliban have lost much of their influence in population centers.

"The fact that 80 percent of the violence has been taking place in areas where less than 20 percent of the Afghan population lives remains unchanged," Little said.

The Taliban have lost a good deal of territory since a 2010 surge of U.S. forces in the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, and they failed to recover it during the past two fighting seasons. Even so, they are resilient, and they are expected to severely test Afghan forces as the U.S. and its coalition partners step further into the background this year and complete their combat mission next year.

Many people, including coalition officials, have cautioned against the heavy reliance on statistics in assessing war progress. Yet the figures often are highlighted when they fit the narrative being promoted by leaders in Washington and other allied capitals.

"It is disturbing that, after 10 years of war, no reliable count of trends in violence exist even in terms of deaths, the most visible form of violence and one that is only a small portion of the actual causes and patterns of violence in the war," Anthony Cordesman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies wrote in February 2012.

Graybeal did not fully explain erroneous reporting of 2012 Taliban attacks by the International Security Assistance Force. It was not clear, for example, at what point the data errors began or who discovered them.

"During a quality control check, ISAF recently became aware that some data was incorrectly entered into the database that is used for tracking security-related incidents across Afghanistan," Graybeal said earlier.

He said an audit determined that portions of the data from unilateral Afghan military operations were "not properly reflected" in the trends ISAF had reported in its monthly updates.

"After including this unilateral ANSF (Afghan National Security Force) data into our database, we have determined that there was no change in the total number of EIAs (enemy initiated attacks) from 2011 to 2012," Graybeal said.

"This was a record-keeping error that we recognized and have now corrected," he added.

While ISAF routinely reports trends in Taliban attacks, it does not reveal exact numbers of attacks. Judging from its illustrative charts, however, it appears that there were more than 28,000 Taliban "enemy initiated" attacks in 2011.

The coalition defines enemy initiated attacks as those by small arms, mortars, rockets and improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. But it does not include IEDs that are found and cleared before they explode.

Trends in Taliban attacks are one yardstick used by ISAF to measure war progress. Others include the state of security in populated areas, the number of coalition and Afghan casualties, the level of economic activity, the degree to which civilians can move about freely and the performance of Afghan security forces.

Graybeal said that even though the number of 2012 Taliban attacks was unchanged from 2011, "our assessment of the fundamentals of campaign progress has not changed. The enemy is increasingly separated from the population, and the ANSF are currently in the lead for the vast majority of partnered operations."

MIT algorithm teaches robots to think outside of the mechanical box video

Although robots are getting better at adapting to the real world, they still tend to tackle challenges with a fixed set of alternatives that can quickly become impractical as objects (and more advanced robots) complicate the situation. Two MIT students, Jennifer Barry and Annie Holladay, have developed fresh algorithms that could help robot arms improvise. Barry's method tells the robot about an object's nature, focusing its attention on the most effective interactions -- sliding a plate until it's more easily picked up, for example. Holladay, meanwhile, turns collision detection on its head to funnel an object into place, such as balancing a delicate object with a free arm before setting that object down. Although the existing code for either approach currently requires plugging in existing data, their creators ultimately want more flexible code that determines qualities on the spot and reacts accordingly. Long-term development could nudge us closer to robots with truly general-purpose code -- a welcome relief from the one-track minds the machines often have today.

One perk gone: Yahoo says no to telecommuting

Disgruntled Yahoo! employees leaked an internal memo from human resources in which CEO Marissa Mayer bans telecommuting, saying "speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home." NBC's Mara Schiavocampo reports.

By Martha C. White

Silicon Valley firms are known for cushy perks: free food, bringing your dog to work and so on. But starting in June, Yahoo employees will lose the benefit of working from home. According to an internal memo leaked on Friday to The Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD.com by numerous disgruntled Yahoo employees, the new policy calls for workers ?physically being together.?

?We need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices... Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home,? reads the memo from Jacqueline Reses, a private equity veteran brought on board by Mayer in September to be the company?s HR boss.

?Hiring, managing and incentivizing talent will be of key importance,? Reses said in the press release announcing her hire.

Although Yahoo beat Wall Street expectations and reported an increase in revenue last month, this recent good news follows a long stretch of poor performance and management turmoil. Some have speculated that Yahoo?s no-telecommuting policy could be a defensive move, a way to lower the embattled tech giant?s headcount without undertaking formal layoffs.?

Shortly after CEO Marissa Mayer took the helm in July, she implemented changes like free lunch, free phones and other perks reminiscent of her former employer, Google. Earlier this month, a Business Insider list of top U.S. employers ranked Yahoo eighth, behind second-place Google but ahead of Microsoft, which came in 14th.

This new policy might make holding onto that spot harder. It drew a scathing response on Twitter and blog comment threads, with many users saying that keeping a stable of unproductive workers is a management failure, and that the policy would prompt a brain drain. (A handful of smaller tech companies used the news as a chance to recruit, inviting frustrated Yahoo! employees to come work ? on a flexible schedule ? for them instead.)

Others defended Mayer, saying an all-hands-on-deck approach was the only way to keep the company's new momentum going.

In her short stint at Yahoo, this isn?t the first time Mayer?s work-life balance choices have been criticized. After giving birth to her first child last fall, Mayer planned to be back at work in only a week or two.

Carley Roney, co-founder of the parent company for TheBump.com, told TODAY that Yahoo!?s policy change could convey an ?anti-parent? sentiment. Yahoo did not immediately respond to the question of whether?new mom Mayer sometimes works from home.

The Yahoo memo made it clear that workers shouldn?t expect a lot of wiggle room or exceptions. ?For the rest of us who occasionally have to stay home for the cable guy, please use your best judgment in the spirit of collaboration,? Reses said.

Studies that have tried to determine whether working from home helps or hurts productivity have drawn mixed conclusions. A study in June by Wakefield Research found that 43 percent of people said they watched TV while ?working? from home, and roughly a quarter each admitted to taking a nap or knocking back a drink on the clock.

But a paper published just last week out of Stanford University said performance increased 13 percent when employees of a Chinese travel agency were allowed to work from home on a trial basis. ?[A]bout 9 percent was from working more minutes per shift (fewer breaks and sick-days) and 4 percent from more calls per minute (attributed to a quieter working environment),? researchers wrote. When the company ended the trial and extended the work-from-home option to the rest of its people, performance rose 22 percent.

What's more, there is a correlation between working from home and higher pay. Census Bureau data released last year found that part-time telecommuters earned a median $22,800 more than those who physically go to work every day.

A Bureau of Labor Statistics report published in June found that telework is making inroads into the American labor market, albeit slowly. About a quarter of survey respondents said they worked from home at least some of the time.

?Evidence also reveals that an increasing number of jobs in the American economy could be performed at home if employers were willing to allow employees to do so,? researchers wrote.?Technology-related jobs were mentioned as top prospects for telework. Hurdles, when they existed, tended to stem from management reluctance rather than technological limitations.

Based on the BLS?s findings, though, Mayer?s new edict could be a blessing in disguise for Yahoo workers. Working from home ?is not unequivocally helpful in reducing work-family conflicts,? the report said. ?Instead, telecommuting appears to have become instrumental in the general expansion of work hours... and/or the ability of employers to increase or intensify work demands among their salaried employees.?

NFL Combine: Who stole the show? - Browns - Ohio

Arkansas-Pine Bluff OT Terron Armstead

How he did it: Armstead, who is 6-foot-5 and weighs 306 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.71 seconds, the best time by an offensive lineman since at least 2006, according to the NFL. A standout at the East-West Shrine Game, Armstead also finished first among linemen in the vertical jump (34.5 inches), tied for fourth in the broad jump (9-4), tied for eighth in the bench press (31 reps of 225 pounds) and tied for 13th in the three-cone drill (7.62 seconds).

Armstead said he was recruited by Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State, but ended up at Pine Bluff because he didn?t get the ACT score he needed until after signing day. He also competes in track at Pine Bluff, and said 61 feet, 5 inches in the shot put is his personal best there.

?I?ve been blessed with a unique skill set. I?m extremely light on my feet for a big guy,? he said last week. ?It?s a blessing.?

Parents talking about their own drug use to children could be detrimental

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Parents know that one day they will have to talk to their children about drug use. The hardest part is to decide whether or not talking about ones own drug use will be useful in communicating an antidrug message. Recent research, published in the journal Human Communication Research, found that children whose parents did not disclose drug use, but delivered a strong antidrug message, were more likely to exhibit antidrug attitudes.

Jennifer A. Kam, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Ashley V. Middleton, MSO Health Information Management, published in Human Communication Research their findings from surveys of 253 Latino and 308 European American students from the sixth through eighth grades. The students reported on the conversations that they have had with their parents about alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana. Kam and Middleton were interested in determining how certain types of messages were related to the students' substance-use perceptions, and in turn, behaviors.

Past research found that teens reported that they would be less likely to use drugs if their parents told them about their own past drug use. In Kam and Middleton's study, however, Latino and European American children who reported that their parents talked about the negative consequences, or regret, over their own past substance use were actually less likely to report anti-substance-use perceptions. This finding means that when parents share their past stories of substance use, even when there is a learning lesson, such messages may have unintended consequences for early adolescent children.

Kam and Middleton's study identifies specific messages that parents can relay to their children about alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana that may encourage anti-substance-use perceptions, and in turn, discourage actual substance use. For example, parents may talk to their kids about the negative consequences of using substances, how to avoid substances, that they disapprove of substance use, the family rules against substance use, and stories about others who have gotten in trouble from using substances.

"Parents may want to reconsider whether they should talk to their kids about times when they used substances in the past and not volunteer such information, Kam said. "Of course, it is important to remember this study is one of the first to examine the associations between parents' references to their own past substance use and their adolescent children's subsequent perceptions and behaviors."

F-35 fleet grounded after engine crack discovery

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon on Friday grounded its fleet of F-35 fighter jets after discovering a cracked engine blade in one plane.

The problem was discovered during what the Pentagon called a routine inspection at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., of an F-35A, the Air Force version of the sleek new plane. The Navy and the Marine Corps are buying other versions of the F-35, which is intended to replace older fighters like the Air Force F-16 and the Navy F/A-18.

All versions ? a total of 51 planes ? were grounded Friday pending a more in-depth evaluation of the problem discovered at Edwards. None of the planes have been fielded for combat operations; all are undergoing testing.

In a brief written statement, the Pentagon said it is too early to know the full impact of the newly discovered problem.

A watchdog group, the Project on Government Oversight, said the grounding is not likely to mean a significant delay in the effort to field the stealthy aircraft.

"The F-35 is a huge problem because of its growing, already unaffordable, cost and its gigantically disappointing performance," the group's Winslow Wheeler said. "That performance would be unacceptable even if the aircraft met its far-too-modest requirements, but it is not."

The F-35 is the Pentagon's most expensive weapons program at a total estimated cost of nearly $400 billion. The Pentagon envisions buying more than 2,400 F-35s, but some members of Congress are balking at the price tag.

Friday's suspension of flight operations will remain in effect until an investigation of the problem's root cause is determined.

The Pentagon said the engine in which the problem was discovered is being shipped to a Pratt & Whitney facility in Connecticut for more thorough evaluation.

Depth of University of Alberta hockey Golden Bears behind team's regular-season success

S19BearsHuskies02222
The University of Alberta Bears, shown here celebrating a goal against the Saskatchewan Huskies in January, are ranked No. 2 heading into the playoffs. (Amber Bracken, Edmonton Sun)

Report an error

EDMONTON?-?

There are 1,001 reasons why Golden Bears hockey should be celebrating what has already been a historic 2012-13 season.

But with playoffs getting underway with a best-of-three semifinal against the rival University of Calgary Dinos this weekend, their work is only just beginning.

In their 100th year of competitive hockey, the Bears closed out the final regular-season weekend by earning their 1,000th and 1,001st victory in program history ? the most out of any team in the CIS.

But even tossing a couple of impressive Canada West records into the mix hasn?t given Bears head coach Ian Herbers much pause for thought.

Not for now, at least.

?Not really, we still have the focus of getting to nationals and winning a national title,? said Herbers, who benched the Bears to a conference-best 23-4-1 record to earn a bye through the first round of playoffs last weekend.

?All our preparation, our league play, we?ve put ourselves in a good position and gave ourselves home ice through all of playoffs

?We?re supposed to challenge for a title every year. Once the season?s over, we?ll have a chance to enjoy everything that?s been accomplished this year, with the 1,000th win, lowest goals-against average ? that?s a record ? three consecutive shutout games ? another record. All that was preparation going into playoffs.?

No. 2-ranked U of A host the No. 10 Dinos at Clare Drake beginning Friday at 7 p.m., where the Bears will ride the hot hand of third-year goalie Kurtis Mucha, who started

17 of 28 games this year on

the way to a conference-high 14 wins and .936 goals-against average.

More impressive yet, besides earlier this year becoming the first Canada West goalie to score a goal, is the fact Mucha hasn?t allowed one in his last 144:20 of play, going back to a 3-2 shootout loss to the Dinos on Jan. 26. He finished off the year with consecutive shutouts,

which combine with one from fifth-year netminder and 2011-12 CIS goaltender of the year Real Cyr to set a

conference record.

?Kurtis has been strong for us all year,? Herbers said of the native of Sherwood Park, who was one of the final four goalies in Edmonton Oilers training camp in 2009. ?He?s started the weekend off for us all year and he?s put us in good position to win every night. So we?re just going to keep going with that rotation.

?He?s taken a bit of a leadership role on the team as well, being in his third year. He?s stepping his game up and it started for him in training camp.?

But the net?s not the only area where the Bears have depth.

?That?s the strength of our team,? Herbers said. ?We want to be using all four lines, all three pairs on defence, everybody needs to be involved. Everybody?s got to be chipping in, not just one line, one goaltender or one defenceman.

?That?s how we wear teams down and frustrate teams because it?s just a big green and gold wave after wave that comes after them.?

Saturday?s game goes at

6 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena, with Game 3 scheduled for Sunday at the same time, if necessary.

The Bears are 3-1 this year against Calgary ? who won last weekend?s quarter-final series over the University of British Columbia 2-1 ? and 14-1 all-time in the post-season when playing them at Clare Drake Arena.

Busy all over

Four will enter, three will leave.

The top-ranked men?s volleyball team in the nation, the U of A Golden Bears, will host the Trinity Western University Spartans, University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and Brandon University Bobcats in the Canada West final four tournament at the Saville Community Sports Centre this weekend.

And only the teams earning a place on the conference podium will move on to the CIS championships March 1-3 at the Universit? Laval in Quebec City.

The Bears earned the right to host, along with the top seed, after an unprecedented 19-straight wins on the way to a 20-2 league record and are looking to improve upon

last year?s conference bronze medal.

They open the tournament against the fourth-seeded Bobcats Friday at 6 p.m., with the bronze- and gold-medal games set for the following day at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.

All games will be webcast through http://ab.canadawest.tv.

Also on slate this weekend, Bears and Pandas swimming are at the University of Calgary for the CIS championships, while Bears and Pandas track and field are at the University of Regina for conference championships.

Bears and Pandas tennis teams host the Green and Gold Invitational at the Saville on Friday.

Coming to Grips With Wire

If there's one area of complication in any direct-current, hobbyist tech project, it's wire. What gauge of wire should you use? How should you terminate it? How can you join wire on a budget? You'll encounter issues like this in any DC-current application project, whether you're working on audio amplifiers or other after-market automotive accessories, solar equipment or amateur radios.

Guam's Solving Its Snake Problem With a Horrifying Rain of Poisoned Mouse Paratroopers

Guam has a problem with brown tree snakes. Specifically, it has two million brown tree snakes, and they're slowly decimating other native species. So scientists have come up with a solution, the only logical one really: fill a bunch of dead mice with painkillers, give each corpse a tiny parachute, and throw them all out of helicopters into the jungle. No but really. More »

Video: GOP playbook: chop down the government, hurt the economy?

>>> sabotage. let's play "hardball."

>>> good evening. i'm chris matthews in washington. let me start tonight with this. it's a down and dirty world when you decide chopping down the government and hurting the economy is the smart move. but bring it all down is now the hard right battle cry. slash spending, short the pentagon. crew up traffic control whatever raises the noise level, bashes the democrats and lowers hope. is this the tea party dream? is this john boehner 's version of feeding time at the zoo, giving the crazies what they want so they will sit in their seats and behave? is this final payment to insanity the last vestige of what calm republicanism is ready to cough up? but how else can you explain the readiness of the gop leadership to let this fraken stein's monster, it doomsday machine , this sequestration go all out berserk? how else can we understand the party of lincoln doing such economic damage to the republic, such damage and moral to the people. democrat ed rendell and republican michael steele . gentlemen, i want to start with you, michael , because i know you will disagree with me and that's what this is about. i read a lot of good reporting today, not analysis, but good reporting from your side of the aisle, further right than you i believe, that says, great, let's have sequestration. let's short the pentagon. let's cut $85 billion out of the hide of the economy. let's remove hope from the country, maybe risk a second dip because it all helps the republican party and the ideology of lower government, less government. your thoughts.

>> well, i doubt you read that they said well, you know, let's take hope out of the country and ruin the economy. but i get your point. what i find interesting in your argument, chris , is that you seem to overlook the fact that you have just as many democrats out there screaming the same thing on the left starting with someone like howard dean . you're also overlooking the fact that this whole idea of sequestration emanated out of the economic team of the white house .

>> whoa, whoa, whoa. what office does howard dean hold right now?

>> i'm saying you're pointing and saying this is just republicans talking about this. you have democrats in the senate and the house. you have democrats outside of the senate and the house who feel the same way, that maybe this is a moment that pushes both of these folks, the white house and the congress, to actually gibb to face --

>> which democrats want to -- i'm sorry, i want to check your facts, michael . i respect you. what democrats holding office in the congress want to cece questions tration.

>> well, the one whos voted for it starting with them.

>> they don't -- they did it to force themselves something better.

>> hold up. wait a minute, chris . you mean this whole thing got past just on republican votes.

>> it was called kicking the can --

>> are you kidding?

>> i'm going to ask you again do you believe right now there are any democrats in the house or snit who want to cece questions tration?

>> yes.

>> name one.

>> there have been folks on the record, chris . i can't name one off --

>> just one.

>> at the moment, but there are -- check the records. there are democrats on the record just as there are republicans now --

>> a lifeline out there. i hope they call in right now because you need a name. anyway --

>> chris , wait a minute -- no, chris , you're not going to --

>> name a name.

>> give me a second. go ahead.

>> okay. governor rendell, your thoughts. i thinkmocrats who don't like sequestration because they're afraid it will not only cut the government, cut government spending , which is already a problem with reduced government joubs out there, but actually really hurt the economy, certainly morale of the country. your thoughts.

>> there's no question. think of it, it's alice in wonderland . democrats are fighting to make sure we don't have willy-nilly cuts that harm the military strength of the country and republicans are advocating for cuts that would severely diminish the military capability of our country. it's nuts, absolutely nuts. it is politics over what's good for the country. the president, chris , put a balanced solution of cuts, significant cuts, including entitlement cuts and raising revenue by making sure that everyone who makes $1 million pays a tax rate higher than the ordinary working person. what's wrong with that? that's what the polls say.

>> that's wrong with that.

>> "the new york times" suggested that congressional republicans are not concerned about how this fight will pan out for their party . they report, quote, house republicans say they are feeling invulnerable to the current clash, redistricting has made moth of them immune to political thets and entreaties for many representing conservative district where the president holds little sway. an attack by president obama is a badge of honor. here is some of the tea party types we found today, just today, michael , who are backing the cuts. ohio congressman jim jordan said back in october, quote, i would say the only thing that's worse than cutting national defense is not having any scheduled cuts in place at all. louisiana congressman steve scalise told dow jones business news, quote, the con shen sus is we want the sequester numbers to come in and finally dereduced spending in washington. south carolina congressman mike mull vain yea said we want to keep the sequester in place and take the cuts we can get. georgia congressman paul br oun, i want to see it go into place and rand paul in his tea party response to the state of the union said not only should the sequester stand, many pundits say the sequester really needs to be at least $4 trillion to avoid another downgrade on america's credit rating . there you have a lot of people on the record, michael , on the republican side saying they want the sequester. i'm curious why you contend this is not a partisan issue.

>> because it isn't, chris . chris , it passed on a bipartisan vote. so unless you're telling me that those democrats including those in the white house who supported -- who originated this idea of sequestration are now saying that that vote didn't matter, that's just ludicrous. that's my only point. yes, republicans have come to a point where republicans are now saying, yeah, okay, let's see what --

>> i think a fair analysis of this is that the democrats who streeted for the sequestration, those who did thought that republicans would never put up with a big cut in defense. i think --

>> so they didn't mean it. they were just toying around with the economy.

>> you could call it toying around.

>> i can -- oh, yeah.

>> i'm not defending everybody that votes --

>> look, you're not getting 9 democrats off -- you're not getting your side off the hook on this and dropping it all on the republicans ' lap because that's the mantra and the spin you want to put on this.

>> okay.

>> both sides are equally responsible --

>> i have to examine that phrase, my fat off the hook. i just found that incredible as a met fa for. it must be an old time expression.

>> you're trying to get your fat off the hook.

>> ier that's a barnyard expression i guess. governor rendell -- you've losted so much weight i don't think that counts. the fat off the hook.

>> i think it means the meat off the grill so the fat doesn't burn away, am i right, michael .

>> that works, too, governor.

>> well, i want to ask michael one question.

>> go ahead, take over.

>> michael , and i agree with you, democrats did vote and support the sequester although i don't think many democrats , if any, would be for the sequester going into effect. but what is wrong with significant cuts in entitlements, more cuts than raised revenue when the only revenue we're raise something on millionaires to make sure that they pay the same tax rate or slightly higher than ordinary working people pay? what's wrong with that.

>> didn't we just do that? hey, governor, didn't we just do that last month?

>> no, let me respond to that. let me respond to that. what we did the last time is we raised the rates but we didn't stop rich people from having their accountants and tax lawyers --

>> oh, lord.

>> rip asunder that and wind up paying 15%. while a secretary pays 28%.

>> you guys are just greedy. you're just greedy. you want to spend, you wnt to spend, you want to spend. you don't want to deal with the debt and this deficit.

>> displan does deal --

>> two chairman fighting. let's look at the "hardball" scoreboard. let's look at the latest poll numbers from bloomberg. president obama is at 55% approval rating , i highest he's been since the first couple weeks of his administration bay back in '09. 55%, michael . let this sink in. 55% job approval.

>> okay.

>> i want it to sink in.

>> what's your point?

>> that's a point in itself. the republican party which you still represent vaguely is at 35% job approval. 35% for a political party that needs 50% to stay in the business. look at this other number up to date. who is to blame for what's gone wrong in d.c. right now? 43% say congressional republicans . and by the way they're the ones you have to defend here, and 34% say obama and the democrats . i think these numbers are pretty scary if you have mr. boehner .

>> chris , i'm not going to argue the politics on that. you're absolutely right. the messaging of the gop is quite frankly, sucked on this issue. there's no doubt about that. but it still doesn't change the underlying facts that democrats , including the newly elected -- re-elected president are on the hook for this just as much as the republicans are. neither side have effectively dealt with this. we've left simpson/bowles sitting on the sidelines. we've now had simpson/bowles two, no one is talking about that. sequester is something that both democrats and republicans put on the table. and now everyone is acting like, oh, my god, we're going to do this? come on.

>> so the republicans are losing the fight over public opinion , governor. it's usually important in politics, public opinion .

>> it's not important until it's time for an election.

>> and a the republicans are losing the fight and democrats are winning it, and the question is who is playing fair here? i don't think boehner is at fault. i think boehner 's problem, and i use the phrase feeding time at the zoo very accurately. i think he's keeping the right wick of hi party now satisfied. they want the sequestration. they don't mind if government takes a big hit . that's what they have been trying to do for years. don't they benefit there 24? if you're in a far right wing district aren't you better off saying we wanted this and we got it, a big cut in government?

>> that's true for the people in the far right districts but is it true for patrick meehan and fitzpatrick and dent in suburban philadelphia? i'm not so sure. i think they're risking losing the house. if john boehner had his druthers heened a the president back in august of 2011 would have entered into a grand bargain which would have had plenty of entitlement cuts, raised revenue, $5 trillion of debt reduction and we wouldn't be facing these problems. but boehner took it back to the caucus and the caucus said no.

>> is that fair? michael , what he just said?

>> i think some of that is fair, yeah. i'm not going to play the whole partisan card here and jump up and down screaming because i'm on your show. no, i think some of that is fair.

>> you don't have to do that. you never do that.

>> i never do that, but i think some of it -- just to bring it back into the real, i mean, i get the whole partisan game of wanting to put the blame on one side, but you know at the end of the day , that poll notwithstanding, the president also risked coming out of this thing on the second of march a little bit more bloodied than he is today as do the democrats .

>> they're all going to get hurt but i do believe if the republican party were a united party today of the slightly or somewhat center right, a bit to the right, maybe a couple notches, it could come to terms --

>> you're going to give us just a couple notches? that's it. just a couple notches?

>> how far right do you want to go?

>> until i'm comfortable.

>> i think it isn't a bargaining party . that's the problem and the priz needs somebody to bargain with like the israelis when they have a good government kand find somebody on the other side of the river to deal with.

>> like i said, when i come into the room to bargain with you i want you to still be in the room and the president has often times left the room, too.

>> i want to say, chris , the president has no fat on the grill. he has no fat on his body at all.

>> fat on the hook? michael , let's get the met fa for. foot on the hook?

>> fat on the hook.

>> what in god's name what does it mean?

>> i think it's on the waterfront. i think it's how rod steiger ended up with that movie. thank you michael and et. coming up, the karl rove schadenfreude express. he was bush's brain, the architect, the evil genius . then came 2012 , now the tea party has declared war and progressives are as happy as hell munching on popcorn and watching this whole spectacle. karl rove is in the middle of trouble.

>>> also, here is the latest critique of the gop appearing in today's " washington post ." the party has become to extreme, too ideological, it's position is irresponsible. you might expect it from nancy pelosi but it's from virginia's lieutenant golf bilboing. it's republican lieutenant governor by the way and things are pretty bad when republicans are talking that way about their party .

>>> and are prisoner the at guantanamo getting federal benefits ? no. it's an online joke that some republicans fell for.

>>> let me finish with what happened to the republican party of the 1960 . it was all about civil rights , all for voting for civil rights and voting rights . you should see the numbers. today it's the party of reince priebus and all that voter suppression . i'm going into that at the end of the 140e. the good republican party on civil rights and today's party . and this is "hardball," the
